Perez is Second Pitt Combine Invitee in as Many Years
NEW YORK – University of Pittsburgh men's soccer midfielder Javi Perez is set to participate in the 2019 adidas MLS Player Combine, as announced by league officials Thursday.
Perez is one of the 60 initial college players invited to participate in the combine, with further invitees to be announced in the coming weeks.
Perez is the second Pitt men's soccer player to be invited to the adidas MLS Player Combine, with former teammate Pol Planellas being the first invitee in 2018.
"I'm very excited for Javi," said head coach Jay Vidovich. "It's a recognition of his talents and all that he brought to Pitt, so obviously it's a tremendous moment for our program. I think Javi is ready for this opportunity and he realizes the challenges that come with it. I wish him the best as he pursues this opportunity."
The combine will provide top collegiate players from across the country with the opportunity to showcase their talents in front of representatives from all 24 MLS clubs in Orlando, Fla., from Jan. 3-9, 2019. All invited players will be eligible for selection in the 2019 MLS SuperDraft, taking place Friday, Jan. 11 at noon in Chicago's McCormick Place.
Fellow ACC schools North Carolina, Notre Dame, Syracuse, Wake Forest, Boston College, Clemson, Louisville and Virginia will also be represented at the combine.
Perez was the Panthers' captain in his final season and earned Second Team All-ACC honors for the second consecutive year, while also receiving United Soccer Coaches All-South Region Third Team honors. The Valencia, Spain, native played a major role as the team leader and was an integral component to the Panther midfield. Perez ranked second on the team in points (11), goals (four) and assists (three) in 2018.
