Middle Hitter Guides Panthers to Outright ACC Title
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Junior middle hitter Layne Van Buskirk of the ACC Champion 10th-ranked Pitt volleyball team earned ACC Player of the Week honors for the first time in her career, as announced Monday.
"Congrats to Layne," Panthers head coach Dan Fisher said. "She's had the best year of her career and we feel she's one of the best middles in the conference. She's had some great weekends lately, and we're glad that the ACC recognizes that."
The Windsor, Ontario, native is the fourth Panther to earn ACC weekly honors this season, in addition to sophomore outside Kayla Lund (Aug. 27, Sept. 10, Nov. 12) , junior right side Nika Markovic (Oct. 8) and redshirt junior outside Stephanie Williams (Oct. 22). As a team, the Panthers have racked up the most ACC weekly honors this season of any team in the league with six.
Van Buskirk led No. 10 Pitt to a 2-0 pivotal road weekend in which the Panthers claimed the outright ACC title, earning their second consecutive league championship. The 6-foot-3 middle recorded a team-high 1.78 blocks per set, including a match-point block at Miami to secure the outright title. She posted seven blocks at Florida State and followed up that performance with nine blocks at Miami, including two solos. She hit .405 for the weekend with 2.33 kills per set.
With the victory at Miami, Pitt is now 28-1, marking its most wins in a season since the Panthers went 28-9 (7-0) in 1991, winning both the Big East Regular Season and Big East Tournament Championships.
