PITTSBURGH—The University of Pittsburgh swimming & diving teams are back in action this weekend for a two-day Atlantic Coast Conference tri-meet against Notre Dame and Virginia Tech at the Rolfs Aquatic Center in South Bend, Ind.
After taking last weekend away from competition, Pitt continues its challenging 2018-19 regular season slate with a tri-meet against two strong ACC programs. The Panthers will face the hosting Fighting Irish and the Hokies in an ACC tri-meet for the fifth time in the past six seasons.
Action will begin at 5 p.m. on Friday evening at the Rolfs Aquatic Center and continue on Saturday at 11 a.m., with the full 38-event swimming & diving meet taking place over two days.
A full schedule of events can be found here.
This weekend's meet not only features three of the ACC's top programs, but also some of the top swimming & diving teams in the nation.
In the most recent College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) Top 25 polls, Notre Dame was featured in the top 20 of both the men's (No. 18) and women's (No. 13) rankings, while the Pitt men's team earned its first place in the national rankings since 2004 by coming in at No. 25. Both Virginia Tech teams also received votes in each of the CSCAA polls.
As third-year Pitt head coach John Hargis and second-year diving coach Katie Hazelton lead the Panthers into their third challenging away meet against ACC opposition already this season, they will look to an emerging group of talented swimmers and divers to score the points necessary for Pitt to defeat Notre Dame and/or Virginia Tech this weekend.
For the nationally ranked Pitt men's team, versatile junior Samy Helmbacher continues to post some of the ACC's top times in multiple events, while junior Eben Vorster has started the season in strong form in his preferred freestyle, butterfly and individual medley events. Senior freestylers Brian Lovasik and Aaron Sett will need to have a strong meet for the Panthers to be successful, as will breakout sophomore sprinter Blaise Vera and impressive freshman diver Nick Garberina.
The Pitt women also feature some of the top swimmers and divers in the conference, led by junior swimmer Valerie Daigneault, who has won all nine of her individual events this season. Senior Rachel Brown is off to a great start to the campaign in her freestyle events, while swimmers Camryn Forbes, Madelyn Shaffer and divers Krista Jones and Amy Read highlight a strong supporting cast.
