PITTSBURGH – Following a high-scoring first quarter, defense prevailed as the Pitt women's basketball team posted a 68-46 win over Gannon in exhibition play Tuesday at the Petersen Events Center. Senior Danielle Garven delivered a standout performance with a game-high 20 points to go along with nine rebounds, while junior Jasmine Whitney (13) and redshirt senior Aysia Bugg (11) also scored in double figures.
"I thought early our team was a little scattered and a little nervous, but I thought that once we kind of got through that emotional part of it, I thought they played much better and much harder," said first-year head coach Lance White. "We were, what I call, stuck in mud a little bit early, but then I was really proud of the way they played, I thought as obviously a positive assist turnover, great step, rebounding them and that stuff which was a weakness that we payed a lot of attention too, and so I think those areas are growth. Again, that's what we are challenging them with everyday as to grow as players and I think we took a step today."
Pitt broke open the game with an 11-1 run to start the fourth quarter. The Panthers forced four turnovers and got fast break layups from Garvin, Bugg and Whitney during the run. Kyla Nelson found Garven for fast break layup to give Pitt a double-digit lead with just under eight minutes remaining and Garven added a pair of free throws following an offensive rebound to push the lead to 53-42 on Pitt's next possession.
The Panthers methodically extended the lead with solid team defense and efficient transition offense stretched the margin to 22 points on a short jumper by freshman Ismini Prapa with under a minute to play. Pitt held Gannon to 1-of-10 shooting in the fourth quarter with the lone basket coming at the 3:53 mark when Tori Obenrader knocked down a three-point field goal from the left corner.
Pitt outscored Gannon, 20-4, in the fourth quarter including a 12-0 edge in fast break points. The Panthers scored eight points off turnovers in the final stanza and also had a commanding 15-4 rebounding advantage.

The Panthers outscored Gannon, 17-8, in the second quarter to carry a 39-31 lead into halftime. Pitt held the Lady Knights to just 4-of-13 shooting from the field, while forcing seven turnovers in the second stanza.

ABOUT SCHOOL DAY
First-year head coach Lance White and the Panthers encourage all local Pittsburgh-area schools to attend the game. All tickets are $1 and all students in attendance will receive educational workbooks. Last season, the Panthers played in front of a School Day record crowd of 10,587 fans when they defeated Cornell.
School Day is an opportunity for local area students to visit one of the top research universities in the country and watch live Division I basketball while participating in fun contests and learning activities. The 2018-19 Pitt women's basketball team features two student-athletes who attended Pittsburgh-area schools: Alayna Gribble (Norwin), and Cassidy Walsh (Seton-La Salle).
In order to support education beyond the School Day event, each school in attendance will be sent free game vouchers, which may be used to reward students throughout the school year for academic excellence. Students may redeem these vouchers at a women's basketball home game this season for free admission for themselves and up to three guests.
