Volleyball, Swimming & Diving Student-Athletes Awarded
PITTSBURGH – Juniors Nika Markovic of volleyball and Samy Helmbacher of men's swimming and diving were named the University of Pittsburgh Student-Athletes of the Week, announced Tuesday.
Right side hitter Markovic helped lead No. 5 Pitt (22-0, 10-0 ACC) to two more ACC wins this past weekend against Notre Dame (3-0) and No. 21 Louisville (3-1) at Fitzgerald Field House. Friday night Markovic led the Panthers in kills with 16 for the match. The Braslovce, Slovenia, native also bolstered eight digs, two blocks, and a .282 hitting percentage for the night. Additionally, Markovic served the Cardinals four aces and nine kills Sunday afternoon. She also put up five assists, nine digs, and five blocks to help the Panthers win the anticipated rematch against 2017 ACC Co-Champions, 3-1. Wins over Notre Dame and Louisville helped launch No. 5 Pitt to its best volleyball ranking on the AVCA weekly coaches poll in program history, alongside the best start to a season for the program 22-0.
Helmbacher was the standout performer for the Pitt men's swimming & diving team on Saturday at No. 15 Virginia, winning two of his three individual events and placing third in another. He triumphed in the 200-yard free (1:37.86) and 200-yard IM (1:48.34) against the nationally ranked Cavaliers, while also earning Pitt team points with his third-place swim in the 200-yard back with a time of 1:50.85. Helmbacher now ranks third in the ACC in the 200 IM, sixth in the 200 free and 11th in the 200 back. His 400 IM (2nd) and 200 breast (8th) times are also among the best in the conference so far this season.
The No. 5 Pitt volleyball team will visit North Carolina this weekend for ACC contests at Wake Forest on Friday, Oct. 26, at 5:30 p.m. and Duke on Sunday, Oct. 28 at 1 p.m. The matches will be streamed live on ACC Network Extra, available via the WatchESPN app.
