
No. 6 Pitt Volleyball Tops Wolfpack, Reaches 20 Wins

Panthers Top NC State in Four Sets
RALEIGH, N.C. – Four Panthers recorded double-figure kills in a four-set win for No. 6 Pitt volleyball (20-0, 8-0 ACC) on the road at NC State (9-9, 3-5 ACC) Sunday afternoon at Reynolds Coliseum.
With its 20th consecutive win, the Panthers extended the nation's longest winning streak and remain one of two unbeaten teams in the country, along with No. 1 BYU (18-0, 8-0 WCC).
Junior right side and reigning ACC Player of the Week Nika Markovic led Pitt with 17 kills, and rounded out a double-double with 11 digs. Junior middle Layne Van Buskirk followed with 13 kills. Redshirt junior outside Stephanie Williams and sophomore outside Kayla Lund had 11 kills apiece.
In addition to Markovic, senior setter Kamalani Akeo recorded a double-double with a team-high 28 assists and 10 digs. Redshirt senior libero Angela Seman paced the Pitt defense with 17 digs.
As a team, the Panthers hit .232 (60-27-142) to the Wolfpack's .180 (49-24-139), and had a hefty advantage in digs, 55-44. NC State out-blocked Pitt, 17.0-11.5.
WITH THE WIN…
Set One: No. 6 Pitt 25, NC State 22
After the Wolfpack secured the first point of the set, a 4-0 run capped by a Markovic kill gave the Panthers a 4-1 advantage. Later in the set, a 4-1 run put NC State within one point, down 7-6, but Pitt answered with a 4-1 run of its own to make it 11-7. The Wolfpack used a 4-0 run to pull ahead, 15-14, and ultimately gained a largest lead of two, twice, 18-16 and 21-19. At that point, the Panthers closed the set with a gritty 6-1 run to come back and win the set, 25-22.
The frame was highlighted by eight ties and three lead changes. Pitt out-hit the Wolfpack, .200 to .162. NC State put up 6.0 blocks to the Panthers' 2.5. Markovic led the way with five kills for Pitt.
Set Two: NC State 25, No. 6 Pitt 22
The Panthers got off to a fast start in the second set, with a six unanswered points. The Wolfpack crept back with a 3-0 run to pull within two, down 11-9, and then used a 5-0 run to earn its first lead, 17-16. NC State kept the lead for the remainder of the set, with six resulting ties, the latest being 21-21. The Wolfpack ended the frame on a 4-1 run to win, 25-22, and even the match, 1-1.
Set Three: No. 6 Pitt 25, NC State 20
Despite nine ties and four lead changes early the set, a 7-1 run swung the momentum in Pitt's favor, and the Panthers did not surrender the lead for the remainder of the frame. A 5-0 run pulled up set point for Pitt, 24-17, but the Wolfpack answered with a 3-0 run to make it 24-20. Pitt claimed the set, 25-20, to go up 2-1 in the match.
Set Four: No 6 Pitt 25, NC State 23
NC State outscored the Panthers 7-1 to start the fourth set, but Pitt climbed back into the set with a 5-1 run to pull within one, down 11-10. Six ties highlighted the last quarter of the frame, with the latest at 23-23. Pitt sealed the deal in the final two points on a kill from Lund and an attack error from the Wolfpack.
Pitt pulled off the win despite being out-hit in the set, .139 to .105.
