PITTSBURGH - University of Pittsburgh student-athletes Giorgiana Zeremenko and Frank Maldonado were named First National Bank Athletes of the Week, announced Tuesday.
Zeremenko was outstanding at the plate for the Pitt softball team against Georgia Tech, going 5-for-10 with two home runs, four RBIs and one run scored. The junior hit .500 on the weekend and slugged 1.101, while recording a .583 on base percentage. In the Panthers' extra-inning win over the Yellow Jackets, Zeremenko went 2-for-3 with two walks and hit the go-ahead three-run long ball that sealed Pitt's victory. Zeremenko also went 2-for-3 in the series finale with another home run.
Maldonado, a redshirt junior, put together an impressive offensive campaign against ACC rival Georgia Tech, going 7-9 in the three games, hitting at a .778 average. The outfielder did not register an out until his third plate appearance of the series finale as he recorded two RBIs, two doubles, two walks and two hit by pitches.
The performance continued to build on an offensive surge for Maldonado, who is currently riding a team-high eight-game hit streak and a 14-game reached base streak. Over the last eight outings, he is hitting .552 (16-29) with eight RBIs, three doubles, one home run, three walks, two stolen bases and four hit by pitchers, in addition to a sacrifice fly and just one strikeout. He has an on-base percentage of .622 and a slugging percentage of .759 over the past eight games, both team bests. Maldonado is Pitt's all-time hit by pitch leader, as he has been plunked 35 times over the past three seasons.
Maldonado and the Panthers will return to action on Wednesday, hosting Youngstown State in a 6 p.m. meeting before closing out the 2017 home season with a three-game weekend against NC State in ACC play.
