LEXINGTON, Ky. - Senior Desmond Palmer became Pitt's third student-athlete to punch his ticket to the 2017 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships by qualifying at the NCAA East Preliminary Rounds at the UK Outdoor Track and Field Facility Friday.
He joined Andin Fosam (women's hammer throw) and Gillian Schriever (women's 10,000m), who qualified Thursday. The Championships will be held June 7-10 at historic Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore.
Palmer, a three-time All-American, qualified for the Championships in the men's 400m hurdles for the fourth time in his career. The Pickerington, Ohio, native placed third in his heat to automatically advance to the semifinals at 50.00 seconds flat. His highly competitive section featured defending NCAA champion Eric Futch of Florida and ACC champion Kenny Selmon of North Carolina.
Palmer also advanced to the men's 110m hurdles quarterfinals, set to be run at 7:20 p.m. Saturday. He automatically qualified as runner-up in his first round heat and placed sixth overall with a time of 13.79. The top three from each quarterfinal plus the next three best times will advance to the semifinals in Oregon.
