GREENSBORO, N.C. – Pitt softball player Valerie Ortega was selected to the All-ACC Freshman Team as announced Thursday by the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC).
In her debut season for the Panthers, Ortega posted strong performances on both sides of the ball. Behind the plate as Pitt's starting catcher, the freshman caught a conference-leading 13 runners stealing and set an ACC high picking off four runners.
At the plate, she batted .238 in ACC play, tallying 15 hits including three doubles. Ortega also knocked in 10 runs and scored four times.
Nine institutions are represented on the All-ACC team and 10 among postseason honorees.
Florida State leads with eight selections. Louisville has five honorees, and Boston College, North Carolina and Notre Dame all have four honorees apiece, followed by NC State and Syracuse with three. Virginia and Virginia Tech each have two student-athletes on the teams and Pitt had one selection.
The All-ACC team and individual season honors were selected by a vote of the league's 11 head coaches and are based on conference statistics.
