PITTSBURGH—The Pitt men's swimming team recently added a pair of quality sprinters to its 2017-18 roster with the signings of two Hungarian swimmers, including one 2016 Olympian from the Rio Summer Games, head coach John Hargis announced Wednesday.
Armin Remenyi, a freestyle sprinter who went to Rio last summer with the Hungarian 800 freestyle relay squad for the Olympics, and Bence Szucsik, a versatile sprinter who specializes in the backstroke events, have both signed National Letters of Intent and will join Pitt for the start of the upcoming campaign.
"We're thrilled to welcome Armin and Bence into our program," Coach Hargis said. "They are both unbelievably talented, elite swimmers with aspirations of competing at the highest levels. Armin has already been to the Olympics representing Hungary, which shows the caliber of swimmer he is. It is going to be fun to have these guys represent Pitt over the next few years."
Beyond earning a place on the Hungarian Olympic swimming team for the 2016 Summer Games in Rio, Remenyi brings to Pitt a lengthy list of credentials with him to the United States. Hailing from Budapest, he won his first national title in Hungary at the age of 8 and has continued to claim numerous domestic honors in the years since. Recently, he qualified for and competed in the 2016 European Junior Swimming Championships held in his home country and the 2015 European Games in Baku, Azerbaijan.
Remenyi's best times include a 100-meter freestyle long course mark of 50.68 recorded at the 2016 Hungarian Championships and a 200-meter freestyle long course time of 1:51.89 from the 2016 Hungarian Junior Championships.
A native of Gyongyos, Hungary, Szucsik has also proved to be a distinguished youth swimmer and one of the top young backstrokers in all of Europe. After winning the 50-, 100- and 200-meter back at the Hungarian Junior Championships last summer, Szucsik advanced to the European Junior Championships, where he recorded top-10 finishes in the backstroke events. He also competed at the 2015 World Junior Championships in Singapore.
His best long course times include a 100-meter backstroke time of 55.56 and a 200-meter backstroke mark of 2:00.14, both set at the SCITEC Open Swim Meet last December in Gyor, Hungary.
