Panthers Close Out Homestand with Maryland Eastern Shore

PITTSBURGH - The University of Pittsburgh baseball team closes out its nine-game homestand with a pair of mid-week battles against Maryland Eastern Shore at Charles L. Cost Field, Tuesday and Wednesday.
Action will get underway at 6 p.m. on Tuesday with the series coming to a conclusion on Wednesday at 1 p.m.
HOW TO FOLLOW
Game One
Pitt (19-21, 8-13 ACC) closes out a nine-game homestand with a pair of mid-week contests against Maryland Eastern Shore. The Panthers enter the week after a series victory over SIU Edwardsville, as Pitt split a Saturday doubleheader and stormed to an impressive 17-5 victory in the Sunday finale. In the final game, the Panthers tallied a season-high 18 hits as Caleb Parry went yard twice in a seven-RBI performance.
Freshman Chris Gomez will get the call in Tuesday's game, making his first career start in his 14th appearance. On the season, Gomez is 3-1 with a 5.09 ERA. He has tossed 23.0 innings, all in relief, allowing 13 earned runs off 27 hits and 10 walks, striking out 19. Leftie Josh Mitchell will take the bump in Wednesday's finale, making his 13th start in as many appearances. Mitchell brings in a mark of 1-4 with a 4.12 ERA in 54.2 innings pitched. He has allowed 25 earned runs off 65 hits and 17 walks, striking out 49.
Freshman Alex Amos paces the Panther offense with a .291 average and a .418 on base percentage. Parry (.288) leads the team in RBIs with 31), while Jacob Wright paces the group with a .466 slugging percentage. Wright and teammate Nick Banman have each hit five dingers on the season, while Parry has smacked four and Frank Maldonado and P.J. DeMeo each recorded three.
SCOUTING MARYLAND EASTERN SHORE
Maryland Eastern Shore (10-33, 6-13 MEAC) snapped a five-game skid this weekend, grabbing a pair of wins in a series victory over Coppin State. The Hawks opened the series with a 15-12 shootout victory, moving on to sweep the doubleheader, 5-3. In the series finale, Coppin State avoided the sweep with a 7-6 win. Maryland Eastern Shore's last non-conference action came in a doubleheader sweep at the hands of Lehigh on April 26, falling 10-4 (7) and 12-6.
The Hawks have not yet announced a pitching rotation.
Offensively, two Hawks sit just above the .300 mark as Ryan Rotondo (.303) and Joey Nicastro (.301) lead the way for the Maryland Eastern Shore offense. Jamison Trower (.296) paces the squad with 26 RBIs, while Rotondo contributes 20. Trower's .395 slugging percentage tops the group, while his on base mark of .381 also ranks the highest for the Hawks.
SERIES WITH MARYLAND EASTERN SHORE
The meetings will be the eighth and ninth all-time between the two squads in a series dating back to the 2002 season. The Panthers hold a 6-1-0 all-time advantage over the Hawks and won the first six meetings before Maryland Eastern Shore captured a 9-6 win in 2016.
Last season, the two teams split a two-game series at Charles L. Cost Field as Pitt defeated the hawks 9-1 in the opener but fell 9-6 in the finale.
INSIDE THE ACC STANDINGS
With three weeks remaining in the season, the Panthers sit in fourth place in the ACC's Coastal Division with a conference mark of 8-13 (.381). North Carolina leads the way at 19-5, followed by Virginia (14-10) and Miami (12-11).
Overall, the Panthers find themselves in 10th place. Louisville paces the ACC with a mark of 17-4, followed by North Carolina (19-5) and Clemson (16-8).

After the impressive offensive weekend, P.J. DeMeo brings in the longest hit streak, sitting at five games. Teammates Jacob Wright and Alex Amos both carry four-game marks, while Frank Maldonado and David Yanni sit at three. Caleb Parry strung together the longest streak of the season at seven games, While Maldonado, Wright and Nico Popa each saw six-game marks snapped earlier this year.
Wright's reached-base mark of 11 games paces the Panther offense, while both Maldonado and Parry carry in nine-game streaks and DeMeo brings in an eight-game mark. Maldonado strung together the longest streak of the season at 15 games, while Parry (14), Wright (13) and Chentouf (11) all boasted double-digit streaks at some point in the year.

The Panthers head to Georgia Tech for a Saturday-Monday night series in Atlanta this weekend. The Monday night matchup with the Yellow Jackets will be the ACC Game of the Week and will air live on ESPNU at 7 p.m. Pitt returns home for its final four games at home, hosting Youngstown State on Wednesday, May 10 before a weekend series with NC State May 12-14.
