Pitt Evens Series with Win over the Wolfpack

PITTSBURGH - The University of Pittsburgh softball team captured game two of its series against NC State, 4-2, Saturday at Vartabedian Field. The Panthers used a four-run third inning to outlast the Wolfpack.
Freshman Brittany Knight and sophomore Sarah Dawson combined to allow only two runs on six hits during seven innings of work. Knight earned the win after 4.0 strong innings, improving to 11-11 on the season. In relief, Dawson allowed only two hits over 3.0 innings.
Junior Giorgiana Zeremenko provided the big hit for the Panthers, a three-run homer in the third inning. With the win, Pitt improves to 22-21 (5-15 ACC) and NC State drops to 16-30 (9-8 ACC).
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Panthers struck first in the third inning, plating four runs. Sophomore Olivia Gray reached second on an error from NC State's shortstop and senior Kaitlin Manuel followed with a walk. With two runners on, Zeremenko drove one over the right field wall for her ninth homerun of the season. Following the long ball, freshman Alexee Haynes doubled down the line to continue Pitt's rally. Freshman Valarie Ortega flew out to right to advance Haynes to third and sophomore Alexis Solak followed with a walk to set up runners on the corners for junior McKalya Taylor. Taylor capitalized with a RBI single to left to drive in the fourth run of the inning.
The Wolfpack answered quickly in the top of the fourth. With a runner on first and two away, Cheyenne Balzer singled to left. During the following at-bat, both runners advanced to on a wild pitch. Haley Finn delivered for NC State with a double to right field, cutting the Panthers' lead in half. Knight induced a groundout to the next batter to escape the inning.
The two teams combined to muster only three total hits over the final three innings of play. Dawson made quick work of the Wolfpack in the final inning, drawing two groundouts and striking out the final batter for her third save of the season.
UP NEXT
Pitt will conclude the series with NC State, Sunday, April 23 at 12 p.m., in its final home game of the season. The Panthers will head to Atlanta, Ga., to face Georgia Tech in their final regular season series from May 5-7.
