PITTSBURGH – Senior forward Michael Young was named third team All-ACC, while fellow senior Jamel Artis received honorable mention honors as voted upon by the league coaches and a select panel of media members from the conference’s 15 institutions and announced by the league office Sunday afternoon. Young becomes the first two-time All-ACC team selection for the Panthers and the fourth honorees since Pitt joined the conference prior to the 2013-14 season.
Young, also a third team All-ACC selection last season, is averaging a team-high 19.9 points, 6.8 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game. He shares the conference lead with 30 double-figure scoring games and is fifth overall with 15 games of 20 or more points scored. Young ranks second in the league in scoring and is 11th in field goal percentage (.459) and 15th in rebounding.
The Duquesne, Pa., native has scored 617 points this season, tied for sixth-most in a season at Pitt. He enters the ACC Tournament with a string of 134 consecutive games played, the fourth-longest stretch in program history. Young became just the seventh player in program history to top the 1,800-point mark and is the only player at Pitt to post at least 1,800 points, 800 rebounds and 200 assists in a career.
Artis, a third team All-ACC pick in 2014-15, was one of 10 honorable mention selections after averaging 18.4 points, 4.8 rebounds and 3.4 assist per game during the regular season. He has scored in double figures in 27 of 30 games, including 11 20+ point efforts. Artis is one of three players in program history to post at least 1,600 points, 500 rebounds and 300 assists in a career.
Young and Artis form the top scoring duo in the ACC at 38.3 points per game and have accounted for 51.3 percent (1170-of-2280) of the team’s scoring this season.
Pitt (15-16, 4-14) plays Georgia Tech (17-14, 8-10) in the opening round of the 2017 New York Life ACC Tournament Tuesday, March 7 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. Game time is set for 7 p.m. with ESPN2 and the ACC Network televising the contest. Georgia Tech topped the Panthers, 61-52, earlier this week in Atlanta.
