Pitt Snaps Skid with 74-55 Defeat of Seahawks

Diop, Walters Post Double-Doubles
PITTSBURGH – For the second time this season, redshirt junior forward Yacine Diop and junior center Kalista Walters posted double-doubles in the same game for Pitt women's basketball (6-4, 0-0 ACC) as the Panthers downed UNCW (5-4, 0-0 CAA) Saturday at Petersen Events Center.
The last time the duo recorded double-doubles in the same outing was the Panthers' season-opening win over Youngstown State (Nov. 10).
Diop had her third game of 20 or more points this season, posting 22 to go along with 10 rebounds, six blocks, five assists and two steals. She was 10-of-15 from the field. Walters made 6-of-7 on the day for 12 points and a team-high 11 rebounds. She had three blocks, three steals and two assists.
Including Diop and Walters, junior forward Danielle Garven and freshman guard Pika Rodriguez posted double figures in the scoring column. Garven had 14 points and Rodriguez had a career-high 12 on 4-of-6 made from 3-point range.
The Panthers had 26 assists on 32 made field goals, while shooting 47.8 percent (32-of-67) for the game. Sophomore point guard Jasmine Whitney had a game-high eight dimes with just one turnover.
The win snapped a three-game losing streak for the Panthers, dating back to the Big Ten/ACC Challenge loss to Wisconsin (Nov. 29).
From the 7:36 mark until the end of the first quarter, the Panthers out-scored the Seahawks by nearly triple (17-6), to complete the first period with a 23-9 lead. Diop had 11 points to lead Pitt in the first.
Diop continued her hot streak and scored the Panthers' first six points of the second stanza, and Rodriguez followed up with back-to-back 3-pointers (35-12). Pitt led by as many as 25 (37-12) in the second quarter, following a layup by freshman Jaala Henry (4:44). Rodriguez hit her third triple with 1:17 to go in the half, giving the Panthers a 42-20 lead. UNCW's Chinyere Bell hit a free throw to seal the halftime score at 42-21.
To open the third quarter, the Panthers used an 8-0 run to reach a 50-21 lead at 7:16. Diop had her double-double with her 10th rebound secured at 6:12 with Pitt leading, 52-23. The Panthers reached their largest lead of the game (32 points) following a Whitney layup at 4:51. However, the Seahawks ended the quarter on a 12-2 run to make it 59-37 with 10 minutes remaining in the contest.
Rodriguez hit her fourth three in the opening minute of the fourth quarter to make it 62-37 for the Panthers. Kalista secured her double-double at the 3:26 mark, with Pitt up 68-46. For the quarter, UNCW had a three-point advantage over Pitt, outscoring the Panthers 18-15 in the final stanza. However, Pitt held on for the 19-point win, 74-55.
