Panthers Drop Second Consecutive Game by Three Points or Fewer
BRONX, N.Y. – Junior center Kalista Walters posted her second double-double of the season for Pitt women's basketball (5-3, 0-0 ACC) as the Panthers dropped their second consecutive game by a margin of three points or fewer, falling at Fordham (4-2, 0-0 Atlantic 10) Sunday at Rose Hill Gym.
Walters had a season-high 22 points on 11-of-20 from the field to go along with 11 rebounds. It was the third double-double performance of her career, and her first since the Panthers' season opener against Youngstown State (Nov. 10).
Freshman Kyla Nelson was the only other Panther to reach double figures in the scoring column, posting a career-high 10, with two 3-pointers.
Pitt led by as many as four points in the first three minutes of the game, moving out to a 7-3 margin after a Diop triple at 7:15. From that time, Fordham used a 10-0 run over the next five minutes to gain a 13-7 advantage, and held their largest lead of the half (21-13) at the end of the first period. The Rams went 4-of-6 from long range over the first 10 minutes. Walters had 10 points to pace the Panthers.
Two 3-pointers from Nelson and one from sophomore Alayna Gribble helped Pitt get its offense going in the second period. To end the half, Jasmine Whitney drove coast-to-coast, fighting through traffic, as time expired and made a layup to put the Panthers within two, down 29-27. In total, Pitt outscored the Rams 14-8 for the period.
After Fordham's Lauren Holden hit two jumpers to open the third quarter (33-27), the Panthers used an 8-2 run to tie the game at 35 with 2:41 remaining in the period. Walters continued to lead the charge offensively for Pitt, posting the next six points for the Panthers. The quarter ended with Pitt in its first lead since 5:20 in the first, up 41-40 with the final 10 minutes remaining.
The teams tied once at the 7:54 mark and traded leads three times until Fordham went on a 6-0 run to move ahead, 52-47. The lead became insurmountable as the Panthers could only come within two. With eight seconds remaining, junior Kauai Bradley completed an and-one situation to make it 57-55, but in the end, the Panthers were forced into a fouling scenario. Holden made a free throw to seal the final score at 58-55.
