Williams Earns Second Honorable Mention All-America Nod
AVCA RELEASE
LEXINGTON, Ky. – Redshirt sophomore Stephanie Williams and sophomore Nika Markovic of the Pitt volleyball team earned AVCA Honorable Mention All-America honors, as announced by the American Volleyball Coaches Association Wednesday.
Markovic and two-time Honorable Mention All-America recipient Williams led the Panthers to their first ACC Championship in 2017 and back-to-back NCAA postseason appearances since 2003-2004.
Williams, who was named to the AVCA All-East Coast Region First, All-ACC First and Preseason All-ACC teams, finished 2017 with yet another impressive season. The redshirt sophomore tallied 26 matches with double-digit kills and a team-leading eight double-doubles. On the season she recorded 377 kills, 3.28 kills per set, 34 aces and 259 digs, good for second-best on the team.
Markovic, who also earned AVCA All-East Coast Region and All-ACC honors, was outstanding this season for the Panthers, dominating in every aspect of the game. Pitt's top hitter on the right side, she led the squad in kills (426), kills per set (3.94) and attempts (919), while tying with Williams in service aces (34).
The sophomore ranked second in the ACC in points per set (4.71), third in kills per set (3.94) and sixth in aces per set (0.31). Markovic recorded 26 matches where she tallied double-digit kills and posted seven double-doubles. She earned ACC Player of the Week twice.
Williams and Markovic were two of seven honorees from the ACC to earn Honorable Mention All-America accolades, and one of three schools (NC State, Miami) to have two representatives. Louisville had one.
2017 marks the fourth-straight year Pitt has had at least one player earn All-America accolades and the third-straight year with two.
