Diop Leads Panthers in Scoring, Rebounding
PITTSBURGH – Redshirt junior forward Yacine Diop had team highs of 15 points and eight rebounds for Pitt women's basketball in a 73-68 exhibition loss to defending PSAC Champion IUP Sunday at Petersen Events Center.
Junior posts Danielle Garven and Kalista Walters had 12 points apiece as the Panthers' only other double-figure scorers.
As a team, Pitt out-shot the Crimson Hawks, 46.7 percent (28-of-60) to 39.0 percent (23-of-59) and had a 37-35 advantage in rebounding. Problems ensued for the Panthers on the defensive end, with IUP earning 19 points from the free throw line to Pitt's five, and scoring 22 points off turnovers.
Neither team found the scoreboard for the first 2:29 of the game, until Diop sunk the first points on a jumper at the 7:31 mark. IUP answered with a triple and eventually extended its lead to 7-2 at 6:18. The Crimson Haws led by as many as 10 (16-6), but the Panthers were able to cut the lead to two after an 8-0 run that included triples from Diop and Alayna Gribble. Solid shooting from the free throw line, including a 10-of-10 streak to start the game, helped the Crimson Hawks reach a 20-16 lead at the first break.
A Gribble 3-pointer to open the second quarter made it 20-19 and a Garven jumper evened the score at 21-21 at 8:44, and then two free throws from freshman Jaala Henry gave Pitt its first lead (23-21) since the score was 2-0. Following two more ties, the Crimson Hawks reached a 34-28 lead with 4:17 to go in the half after back-to-back threes from Lauren Wolosik and Megan Smith. The Panthers' defense picked up and held IUP without a field goal for the remainder of the half, but went into the locker room with the score tied, 37-37.
Pitt found its largest lead of five (43-38) at the 9:07 mark in the third quarter following a Kyla Nelson 3-pointer. However, a 10-0 run for the Crimson Hawks over the next four minutes put them in a 48-43 lead with 5:36 to go in the quarter. The Panthers were able to fight back and re-gain the lead (53-51) with 23 seconds left before the fourth, but a Wolosik layup at the buzzer tied the game for the seventh time.
A 6-0 run pushed the Crimson Hawks ahead, 59-53, with 8:12 to go in the game. The Panthers were unable to overcome their six-point deficit in the fourth quarter, closing the gap to as few as two, and fell by a five-point margin, 73-68.
