Sophomore Leads Volleyball to First ACC Championship, Freshman QB Instrumental in Football Upset
PITTSBURGH – University of Pittsburgh student-athletes Nika Markovic and Kenny Pickett were named First National Bank Student-Athletes of the Week, announced Tuesday.
Markovic, a sophomore, was named ACC Volleyball Player of the Week after having a standout showing against Virginia Tech and Virginia, leading Pitt to a share of the 2017 ACC volleyball title. She was outstanding offensively, tallying 5.00 kills per set after putting away 30 kills in 62 attempts. Markovic hit at a .403 clip on the weekend after seeing most of the balls coming her way. She committed just five errors. Markovic also tallied 16 digs (2.67/set) and four blocks defensively. The Braslovce, Slovenia, native began the weekend by hitting at a team-leading .419 clip with 20 kills against the Hokies. She also added six digs. Against the Cavaliers, Markovic posted her 24th game of double-digit kills and earned a double-double, as she tallied 10 kills, while also putting up 10 digs and three blocks.
In the first start of his college career, Pickett, a freshman, accounted for three touchdowns (two rushing and one passing) in Pitt's 24-14 win over No. 2 Miami Friday, snapping the Hurricanes' then-longest active win streak in the nation (15 games). Pickett became the first true freshman to start at quarterback for Pitt since Pat Bostick in 2007. He completed 18-of-29 passes (62 percent) for 193 yards with zero interceptions and was Pitt's second-leading rusher with 60 yards on 13 carries (4.6 avg.). The Oakhurst, N.J., native was named the ACC's Rookie of the Week for his efforts.
