Pitt to Meet VCU in First Round of 2017 NCAA Tournament

Panthers Earn Postseason Bid for Second Consecutive Season

PITTSBURGH – For the second consecutive year, the University of Pittsburgh volleyball team will take part in the NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball Tournament, as announced by the selection committee Sunday evening.
Pitt, who clinched a share of the 2017 ACC volleyball title with an 18-2 record in conference play Saturday, Nov. 25, will make the short trip to Penn State in State College, Pa., for a 5 p.m. match-up against VCU [30-2, 14-0 A-10] Friday, Dec. 1 in Rec Hall.
"We couldn't be more excited to get back to the NCAA Tournament for the second straight season," said head coach Dan Fisher. "We can't wait to have our fan base back with us in State College as we take on VCU."
This will be the sixth meeting between the Panthers and Rams, with Pitt leading the all-time series 4-1. The Panthers dropped a four-set match in their most recent matchup back in 2009. VCU was tabbed A-10 Champions after defeating Dayton last weekend. The Rams went undefeated in conference action with 14 wins.
Pitt will be appearing in its 15th NCAA tournament, marking just the second time the Panthers have earned a bid since 2004. In last year's postseason, Pitt opened the 2016 tournament with a win over No. 23 Dayton (3-1), before falling to No. 13 Penn State (3-1) at Rec Hall in State College, Pa.
In the event of a Pitt win, the Panthers will take on the winner of the Penn State/Howard match-up, which is slated for Friday, Dec. 1 at 7:30 p.m. following Pitt's match-up with VCU. Saturday's second-round match will take place at 7 p.m. in Rec Hall.
The Panthers are one of six ACC teams to make the tournament. The other teams include Louisville, NC State, Miami, Florida State and Notre Dame.
2017 NCAA TOURNAMENT
The 2017 Division I Women's Volleyball championship provides for a field of 64 teams to compete in a single elimination tournament. Of the 64 teams, 32 teams will receive automatic qualification while the remaining 32 teams are selected on an at-large basis by the Division I Women's Volleyball Committee.
First and Second round competition will be held at 16 non-predetermined campus sites. At each campus site, four teams will compete in single-elimination first round competition. The two advancing teams then compete against each other in single-elimination second round competition at the same campus site. The winning team from each of the 16 second rounds advances to the regional round.
Regionals for the NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball Championship will be held at four non-predetermined campus sites. At each site, four teams compete in single-elimination regional semifinal competition. The two advancing teams then compete against each other in single-elimination regional final. The winning team from each of the four regions will advance to the DI Women's Volleyball Championship final site in Kansas City.
The 2017 NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball Championship will be held at the Sprint Center in Kansas City. The national semifinals will be held December 14 with times to be announced. The national championship will take place December 16 with time to be announced.

All-session tickets for the first and second rounds are priced at $12 for adults and $10 for students and youth ages 12 and under. Groups of 20 or more may purchase tickets at a discounted rate of $8.
Fans can purchase tickets online here, by calling 1-800 -NITTANY or by visiting the Athletics Ticket Office in the Bryce Jordan Center from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.
Single-match tickets will only be sold at the door the night of each match. Tickets are $8 for adults and $6 for students and youth ages 12 and under. Doors will open at 4 p.m. Friday, Dec. 1st and 6 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 2nd.
