The Opening Tip
- Pitt hosts UC Santa Barbara Wednesday, Nov. 15, in a regional round game of the Progressive Legends Classic. The contest will tip at 7 p.m. at Petersen Events Center and will be broadcast on ACC Network Extra.
- Ryan Luther and Jonathan Milligan are the lone returning scholarship letterwinners for the Panthers. Pitt welcomes 11 new scholarship players to the roster for the 2017-18 season.
- Pitt has dropped its first two games of the season for the first time since the 1996-97 season. Both losses have been by single digits with the Panthers trailing by four points or fewer in the final 90 seconds of play.
- Pitt fell 83-78 in overtime Monday to Montana, snapping a string of 21 consecutive home wins in the month of November.
- Ryan Luther recorded his second career double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds in the loss. He was 8-of-15 from the field and grabbed a career-best seven offensive rebounds.
- Shamiel Stevenson came off the bench to score a team-high 19 points to go along with six rebounds, three assists, one blocked shot and a steal. The freshman forward went 7-of-10 from the field in 33 minutes of action.
- Jared Wilson-Frame notched his second double-figure scoring effort with 15 points on 5-of-10 shooting from the field and 4-of-4 from the foul line.
- Pitt was plagued by 19 turnovers and a 30-6 deficit in points off turnovers in the loss. Montana also posted an 18-6 advantage in fast break points.
- Pitt is 8-1 all-time in the Legends Classic, claiming championships in 2008 and 2013.
- The Panthers have dropped back-to-back games to open the season for the first time since the 1996-97 season when the team dropped three consecutive games to open the year.
- Pitt is 61-2 all-time in the month of November at Petersen Events Center following Monday's overtime loss to Montana.
- The Panthers are one win shy of becoming the sixth team in the ACC to reach the 1,600 win mark. Pitt is 1,599-1127 entering its 111th season of play.
- Pitt is one of 12 NCAA Division I programs to post more than 400 wins since the start of the 2001-02 season. The Panthers' 401 wins are the fifth most in the ACC in that span.
- Jared Wilson-Frame comes to Pitt with a reputation of being an explosive scorer. In two seasons at Northwest Florida State Junior College, he scored 981 points (15.1 ppg.), while making 155 three-point field goals. Wilson-Frame is averaging a team-high 17.5 points per game, while shooting 48.1 percent (13-of-27) from the field.
- Ryan Luther posted his second career double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds, including seven offensive boards, against Montana. Luther has scored in double figures in both games this season and is averaging 16.0 points and 9.5 rebounds per game.
- Shamiel Stevenson scored 19 points, tied for 11th-most off the bench by a freshman at Pitt, on 7-of-10 shooting from the field against Montana. He is averaging 13.0 points, 7.5 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game, while shooting 64.3 percent (9-of-14) from the field.
- Pitt is one of six programs in the NCAA returning no starters from a season ago. The Panthers entered the season with an NCAA-low three career starts combined (Ryan Luther [2], Jonathan Milligan [1]) from its roster. Chattanooga and NC Central were second on the list with 11 combined career starts from their rosters.
- Pitt's seven-player freshmen class - Terrell Brown, Marcus Carr, Khameron Davis, Samson George, Peace Ilegomah, Shamiel Stevenson and Parker Stewart - is tied for the largest freshmen class in the NCAA. Duke, Kentucky and Mount St. Mary's also have seven scholarship freshmen on their respective rosters. Pitt's freshmen class is averaging 32.0 points, 14.0 rebounds and 7.5 assists per game through the first two contests.
- The Panthers' Canadian tandem of Marcus Carr and Shamiel Stevenson combines to average 23.0 points, 9.5 rebounds and 6.0 assists per game.
- The Panthers have an NCAA-high 11 scholarship newcomers on the roster this season. Pitt's three returning letterwinners - Ryan Luther, Jonathan Milligan and Zach Smith – are tied for the fifth fewest in the NCAA.
- Pitt's five international prospects - Marcus Carr, Kene Chukwuka, Samson George, Peace Ilegomah and Shamiel Stevenson - are the most in program history.
- The Pitt roster features seven players with wingspans of 6-10 or better. Freshmen Peace Ilegomah and Terrell Brown lead the way with wingspans of 7-4 and 7-3, respectively.
- Pitt set a school record with 263 three-point field goals a year ago. Kevin Stallings-led teams have made 250 or more threes in six of the past seven seasons. The Panthers are 14-of-46 (.326) from beyond the arc through two games.
- Pitt has been plagued by turnovers in the first two games of the season averaging 16.0 turnovers per contest and allowing 22.0 points per game off turnovers.
- Pitt has had a double-figure scorer off the bench in each of the first two games and is averaging 25.0 points per game off the bench on the season.
- The Panthers have started a different lineup in each of the first two games with eight different players starting a game. Ryan Luther and Jared Wilson-Frame are the lone players to start both games for the Panthers. The duo combines to average 33.5 points per game.
