Youthful Men’s Squad Captures Three Victories
RESULTS
PITTSBURGH – The University of Pittsburgh men's and women's swim and dive teams kicked off their home season, hosting Virginia and LSU in the first of a two-day meet at Trees Pool.
The divers kicked off the afternoon, as Meme Sharp posted the top score on the women's side, taking fourth with a mark of 248.00 on the 3M. Joe Ference also captured fourth, finishing the 1M board with a score of 276.80.
"All of the divers did some good things in their lists today," said head diving coach Katie Hazelton. "We've been working a lot on the technical side of things within their dives and we saw that in some key dives today. Let's hope tomorrow that they can put all of their dives together a little bit more. Overall, I'm pleased and we're going in the right direction."
The men's swimmers were aided by some key victories for the young squad, as the Panthers took three individual titles on the men's side. Samy Helmbacher captured an individual title in the 400 IM, besting Ted Schubert of Virginia to claim the win with a time of 3:49.83 Brian Ramsey took first in the 100 breast, swimming a 55.91, while Brian Lovasik captured first in the 100 free with a time of 44.78.
"It's awesome to have the young guys perform well early on," said head coach John Hargis. "We've got a lot of talent in the younger classes and it's fun to watch them compete. They train hard every single day and to see some of that come through in a meet like this is great. High pressure situations and they're not backing down and that's what we want to see."
In the 100 fly, Armin Remenyi took second, posting a mark of 49.23. He would take second in the 100 free also, earning a time of 45.04 to finish just behind Lovasik.
Aaron Sett placed second in the 1000 free, swimming to a time of 9:12.83. The men's 400 medley relay team also took second, earning a time of 3:18.65 with Bence Szucsik, Ramsey, Remenyi and Lovasik.
For the women, senior Amanda Richey continued to dominate the distance events, earning a first place finish in the 1000 free with a mark of 9:57.00, besting the second place finisher by more than nine seconds.
In the 400 IM, the Panther women captured second through fourth places, with Lea Gwennap (4:25.33), Shahar Menahem (4:25.40) and Richey (4:25.92) leading the way. Valerie Daigneault would earn a second place finish in the 200 back, posting a time of 1:57.52.
"We need to keep competing," Hargis added. "We had some great swims today. It was a tough break jumping our relay on the men's side, we needed those 11 points, but youth and inexperience shows sometimes. It's better to do it now than at the end of the year. Tomorrow we need to come back and battle again. We have opportunities to win events and that's what we want to do."
The Panthers return to the pool tomorrow at 10 a.m. for the final day of competition with Virginia and LSU.
