Panthers Sweep Virginia Tech at Home

Pitt Earns Eighth Straight Victory
PITTSBURGH – The University of Pittsburgh volleyball team swept Virginia Tech Sunday afternoon at the Fitzgerald Field House to extend its win-streak to eight straight games.
The Panthers (11-4, 4-0 ACC) downed the Hokies (7-2, 1-3 ACC) in straight sets, 25-13, 25-22, 25-17.
Pitt had a solid day all around as the Panthers hit .303 and tallied 40 kills on offense, while holding Virginia Tech to a .032 clip.
Redshirt sophomore Stephanie Williams led Pitt's attack with 11 kills, while sophomore Nika Markovic added 10 and hit .381.
Junior Kamalani Akeo aided the Panthers' offense with 31 assists and at the service line, Pitt tallied six aces including four from redshirt junior Angela Seman.
Seman also added a team-leading 14 digs in the back row, while sophomore Layne Van Buskirk led the Panthers at the net with five blocks.
Set One: Pitt 25, Virginia Tech 13
Pitt opened the first set with a 25-13 win, behind a stellar offensive performance. The Panthers hit .375 in the set and tallied 12 kills.
Pitt held Virginia Tech to a negative clip as they registered just eight kills in 29 attempts with 10 errors.
The Panthers got out to a quick lead at the start of the first set forcing the Hokies to call an early timeout.
Pitt's offense continued to dominate adding 10 more points to their total to lead by double-digits 17-7. Another Virginia Tech timeout would occur but wouldn't help the Hokies as errors plagued the visiting team through the final points.
Set Two: Pitt 25, Virginia Tech 22
Pitt took a 2-0 lead after closing out the second set with a 25-22 win. The Panthers defense picked up 17 digs and posted four total blocks.
Pitt got out to a solid 7-3 lead in the second set but the Hokies battled back to tie the score 9-9, which led to the two teams exchanging leads through the midpoint of the set.
Back-to-back kills by freshman Chinaza Ndee gave the Panthers a late edge, 19-17, forcing a timeout from Virginia Tech.
The Hokies tied the score again 21-21, but another round of consecutive points by Pitt put them back out in front 23-21.
The Panthers capped off the win with a Virginia Tech error and a block assist by Van Buskirk and senior transfer Alex Rosignol.
Set Three: Pitt 25, Virginia Tech 17
Pitt closed out the match with a 25-17 win to sweep the Hokies. The Panthers hit .296 to end the match, led by Markovic who was a perfect 3-for-3.
The squad got out to a 5-1 lead to start the second set but a five-point run by Virginia Tech gave the Hokies a 6-5 advantage.
The Panthers got back on track with four consecutive points and found a 12-8 lead. Virginia Tech called a timeout to regroup but the home squad continued to put on the pressure.
Pitt outscored the Hokies 7-2 in the next 10 points to take a 19-10 lead. VT called a timeout and posted a kill out of the break but the Panthers worked their way up to match point, 24-14.
The Hokies fought out three match points to make it 24-17, but freshman Kayla Lund put away the winning point for the Panthers.

Pitt will head return to the road next weekend as the squad begins a two-week road stint. The Panthers will take on Florida State Friday, Oct 6 at 6:30 p.m. and Miami Sunday, Oct 8 at 12 p.m.
