Panthers Defeat Ohio Dominican, Akron on the Road

PITTSBURGH - The University of Pittsburgh softball team defeated Ohio Dominican and Akron in fall exhibition play at Lee R. Jackson stadium Sunday, Sept. 25 in Akron, Ohio.
The Panthers displayed strong play on both sides of the ball, scoring a combined 15 runs at the plate, while holding both teams scoreless on defense. Pitt defeated Ohio Dominican 12-0 and Akron 3-0.
The Panthers came out strong against Ohio Dominican, posting a 12-0 shutout in game one of the doubleheader.
Lone senior Kaitlin Manuel led the way going 2-for-2 with a double and triple. She also posted two RBIs and crossed the plate twice.
Freshman Connor McGaffic contributed offensively as well, finishing with two doubles in three at bats. She also brought around two runs and scored twice herself.
On the mound against the Panthers, junior Kayla Harris and sophomore Sarah Dawson combined for seven strikeouts and gave up just two hits.
Pitt defeated Akron 3-0 in game two with junior McKayla Taylor leading the way. Taylor went 2-for-3 against the Zips with two doubles and two RBIs.
Freshman Hannah Edwards went 1-for-3 with a single, walk and one run scored, while junior Erin Hershman also single and scored.
Freshman Brittany Knight pitched a complete game against Akron, sitting down five zips on strikeouts and allowed just two hits.
The Panthers conclude fall exhibition play Sunday, Oct. 2 when they welcome West Virginia Wesleyan to Vartabedian Field in Pittsburgh.
