Panthers Sweep Colonials to Conclude Tournament Play

PITTSBURGH - The University of Pittsburgh volleyball team concluded the Panther Challenge with a 2-1 record after sweeping Robert Morris in its final match Saturday evening.
The Panthers [9-3] defeated the Colonials [6-8] in straight sets 25-13, 25-9 and 25-15.
As a team, Pitt dominated offensively tallying 48 kills to Robert Morris' 16. The Panthers also hit .512 in the match and had seven players record kills.
Mariah Bell led Pitt's attack with 12 kills on 22 attempts with just a single error. The junior recorded a .500 hitting percentage. Redshirt senior Jenna Potts, senior Maria Genitsaridi and freshman Nika Markovic also generated offense for the Panthers, as they all recorded hitting percentages of .600 or higher. Markovic also added three service aces.
Potts was Pitt's top blocker with five assists while Seman dug up 17 balls in the back row.
Set One: Pitt 25, Robert Morris 13
The Panthers came out swinging in the first set, holding nothing back. After back and forth points early on, the Colonials called its first timeout as Pitt took a 14-9 lead on five straight points, including back to back kills by Bell and Potts.
The Panthers dominated through the remainder of the set. Pitt held Robert Morris to just 13 points and the home team outscored the Colonials 11-4 to go on to win 25-13.
Set Two: Pitt 25, Robert Morris 9
For the second straight set, Pitt opened with a four point lead and earned a 5-0 advantage before Robert Morris scored its first point.
The struggling Colonials called their first timeout following four straight Panther points which included kills by Bell, Markovic and redshirt freshman Stephanie Williams. Pitt led by a substantial eight points.
The Panthers offense continued to put away kill after kill to take a 16-4 lead, calling for another timeout by Robert Morris. Following the break, the Colonials were able to tally five points but Pitt went on to hold the Colonials to single digits and win the set 25-9.
Set Three: Pitt 25, Robert Morris 15
What looked to be a close set after Pitt and Robert Morris opened with back and forth points turned out to be another dominant performance by the Panthers.
Robert Morris trailed by one early on in the match but a strong offensive performance led Pitt to lead 15-8. Of the Panthers 15 points, 11 of them came from kills.
Following the Colonials first timeout call at that point, Pitt put together four straight out of the break to extend its lead to 18-9. Robert Morris used its second timeout.
The Colonials were unable to hold off the Panthers and make a comeback as Pitt went on to win 25-15.
