PITTSBURGH -- The University of Pittsburgh softball team will begin its fall exhibition games this weekend with a doubleheader against Slippery Rock. The games will be played back-to-back starting at 11 a.m. on September 11. All home games are set to be played at Vartabedian Field in the Petersen Sports Complex.
The Panthers return for the 2016-17 season after recording a 31-21 record this past season. With one of the most impressive offensive stat lines in the nation, the team finished with a team slugging percentage of .546, an average of 1.44 home runs per game and a team batting average of .317.
Pitt will look to fill a few holes in their roster left by a handful of graduating seniors including infielder Maggie Sevilla and catcher/infielder Shelby Pickett.
Sevilla left an impact on the program as she impressively ranks second all-time in hits (212), runs (145), home runs (33) and RBIs (126).
Pickett, who's hitting was instrumental to the Panthers offensive success the last two seasons, earned NFCA Mid-Atlantic Second Team All-Region status, was selected for the ACC All-Tournament Team and was a Second Team All-ACC honoree in 2015.
This season, Pitt will look for contributions from their returning class of five sophomores, five juniors and a lone senior in Kaitlin Manuel.
Head coach Holly Aprile and the Panthers welcome six new student-athletes to their roster for the season including freshmen Hannah Edwards, Alexee Haynes, Brittany Knight, Kaitlyn Kruger, Connor McGaffic and Valerie Ortega, in addition to junior transfer Taylor Stimson.
