PITTSBURGH - The University of Pittsburgh volleyball team defeated American 3-1 in its second match of the Panther Invitational Saturday afternoon at the Fitzgerald Field House.

The Panthers [6-2] dominated the Eagles [6-4] in the opening set 25-15 but fell in a tough set two 25-22. Pitt bounced back to win the final two sets 25-13 and 25-21.

For the second time this season, redshirt freshman Stephanie Williams produced at least 20 kills in a match including a career-high 25 this afternoon against American. The Ohio native hit .455 [25-5-44] and added six digs, three blocks and an ace.

Other top performers included sophomore Mariah Bell who put up a double-double with 17 kills and 10 digs and redshirt senior Jenna Potts who tallied 10 kills and hit .500.

Defensively, redshirt sophomore Angela Seman finished the match with 28 digs, while sophomore Kamalani Akeo aided the Panthers with a career-high 53 assists.

Set One: Pitt 25, American 15
Pitt opened its first match of the day on fire, getting out to an 8-2 lead over American. The Panthers began the set with three straight kills and a service ace by Bell before the Eagles scored their first point.
The home team continued to dominate, forcing American into an early timeout following three consecutive Pitt points including a Seman ace which put the Panthers ahead 13-5.
Pitt continued its streak and put together seven straight to take 17-5 lead.
Behind the Panthers 16 kills, Pitt continued to put it on the Eagles as they held on to win 25-15. The home team conclude the match with a .306 hit percentage, while holding American to .129.

Set Two: Pitt 24, American 26
The Panthers trailed early on the in the second set, falling behind the Eagles 9-6 but a couple of Pitt kills and two American errors knotted the score at 10 all.
The two teams exchanged back and forth points until the Panthers earned a 17-16 advantage on back to back Bell kills but American fought back to tie the set 19-19 following a timeout.
Three consecutive kills, one by freshman Nika Markovic and two from freshman Layne Van Buskirk would put Pitt ahead 24-21 but the Eagles ended the set on a five point run to defeat the Panthers 26-24 and tie the match at 1-1.

Set Three: Pitt 25, American 13
Pitt entered the third set on fire, opening with a seven point run before American scored its first point.
The Panthers were unstoppable throughout the remainder of the match as they went on to hit the 20 point mark before the Eagles hit double-digits. Pitt led 20-7.
The Panthers created to large of a gap as American didn't stand a chance to come back. The Panthers went on to win 25-13. Williams put up eight kills in the set and hit .800.

Set Four: Pitt 25, American 21
The tables were turned in the opening of the fourth set as American tallied four straight points.
The Eagles continued to add to their total, calling for a timeout from head coach Dan Fisher as Pitt trailed 10-4.
Following the timeout, the Panthers put together six points to American's one to pull back within a single digit, 11-10. Three of Pitt's six points came from Bell in straight order.
The Eagles asked for a timeout but the break did nothing as the Pitt outscored the Eagles 8-5 to come back and lead 18-15.
American never gave up as they pulled back within a point, 20-19, calling for a Panthers timeout but Pitt held on to win 25-21.
