Pitt Falls to Missouri, 3-1

KENNESAW, Ga. - The University of Pittsburgh volleyball team suffered its first loss of the season to Missouri Saturday morning at the Kennesaw State Invitational at the KSU Convocation Center. The Panthers dropped the match to the Tigers, 3-1.
Pitt opened the first set with a 25-22 victory, but dropped three straight 28-26, 25-23 and 25-11 to end the game.
For the second straight day Layne Van Buskirk performed at the highest level, notching 13 kills on 15 attempts with just a single error. The freshman standout hit .800 in the match to lead the Panthers.
Redshirt freshman Stephanie Williams led Pitt in kills for the second consecutive match with 15, a career high for the Ohio native. She also added five digs.
Defensively, redshirt sophomore Angela Seman dug up 17 balls for the Panthers, while redshirt senior Jenna Potts led Pitt at the net with four blocks.
The Panthers struggled from the service line against Mizzou, committing 14 service errors, while the Tigers put together 12 aces, seven at the hands of Melanie Crow.

Pitt and Missouri were neck and neck through the opening portion of the first set until three kills by the Panthers, including back to back by Van Buskirk, and three errors by the Tigers gave Pitt a 12-8 lead.
On that note, Missouri called its first timeout but it didn't help as the Panthers extended its lead to 16-9.
Errors continued to haunt the Tigers as they gave Pitt a 22-16 lead off of them, calling for a second timeout.
Out of the break, Mizzou picked up a kill, prompting head coach Dan Fisher to call a timeout of his own but the Panthers would go on to reach set point first.
The Tigers fought off three straight Pitt set points but the Panthers held its lead and sealed the win on a final kill by Williams.

Missouri gained an early lead in the second set, taking an 8-4 lead following the completion of two service aces.
Pitt worked its way back, scoring four straight points, to take an 11-10 lead partially in part to some impressive blocking at the hands of Kelsey O'Neill, Maria Genitsaridi and Van Buskrik.
Back to back kills by Potts and Genitsaridi put Pitt ahead 19-17 after multiple back and forth points, prompting Mizzou to call a timeout.
Out of the break, the Tigers outscored Pitt 4-1 to move ahead 21-20 and force the Panthers to call a time out of their own.
The leader changed once again following two hitting errors by Missouri and an O'Neill block, giving Pitt a 23-21 lead.
The Panthers had four set point chances but were unable to finish as the Tigers went on to win the set 28-26.

Pitt got off to a 3-0 start in the third set after three straight kills. Van Buskirk opened with the first and O'Neill doubled up putting away back to back balls.
Missouri worked its way back to take a 9-8 lead but impressive play offensively by Mariah Bell, Williams and Van Buskirk put the Panthers back in front 11-9.
The Tigers called a timeout as Pitt extended its lead to 15-11 and then once again with the score reading 20-16.
Missouri outscored the Panthers 6-2 over the next eight points to pull back within two, 22-20, calling for a Pitt timeout.
Out of the break, the Panthers added one to their point total but two points for the Tigers saw another timeout call from Pitt.
Three straight service aces by Crow ended the third set.

The Tigers led the Panthers early on in the fourth, taking an 8-4 lead.

Pitt called for a quick timeout to try and stop Missouri's momentum but the Tigers extended their lead to 14-8 and the Panthers asked for another break in action.
Missouri continued to add to its total and went on to win 25-11.
