CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The University of Pittsburgh softball team defeated Boston College, 8-2, in its final regular season game Sunday morning at Shea Field.
The Panthers [31-20, 8-14 ACC] jumped on the Eagles [30-22, 12-9 ACC] early, scoring six runs through the first two innings of play. Boston College scored a run a piece in the first and second but Pitt held the Eagles scoreless through the remainder of the game.
Redshirt senior Maggie Sevilla and senior Jenna Modic highlighted the Panthers offensive success, each tagging a ball over the wall. Sevilla finished the day 3-for-3, and with those three at-bats broke the all-time record with 672.
Sophomore Erin Hershman and freshman Olivia Gray each added two hits apiece to Pitt’s total of 10.
On the mound, Modic (7-9) pitched a complete game, giving up just two runs, both of which were earned.
Pitt 8, Boston College 2
• The Panthers jumped on the board early in today’s game, scoring three runs in the top of the first. Leadoff hitter Shelby Pickett got things going for Pitt as she was hit by a pitch and then immediately moved to third on a double to right field by Sevilla. With two away, Zeremenko walked to juice the bases. In the next at-bat, Gray put up her first hit of the day, a RBI-single to score Pickett and Sevilla. Senior Ashlee Sills, who entered on the base paths for Zeremenko, came home after a bunt single by Hershman ended up in the outfield on a throwing error by the Eagles’ catcher.
• Boston College cut the Panthers lead to 3-1, as Megan Cooley scored on a sacrifice fly by Chloe Sharabba.
• Pitt’s bats remained hot in the second inning as the Panthers added an additional three runs to extend their lead to 6-1. With nothing going in the first two at-bats for Pitt, Sevilla hit a chopper to the third baseman for a single and scored on a double by Taylor. Modic sent a ball flying over the centerfield wall to score Taylor and give the Panthers a five run lead.
• The Eagles scored another run in the bottom of the second to bring the score to 6-2, Pitt. Carly Severini walked to lead off the inning and advanced to third after Jordan Chimento was hit by a pitch and a sacrifice bunt was laid down by Loren DiEmmanuele. Severini scored on a ground out back to Modic on the mound. Pitt would hold Boston College scoreless for the remainder of the game.
• Pitt tacked on its first of two insurance runs in the top of the fifth, as pinch runner Morgan Choe scored on a RBI-single by Gray. Choe ran for Modic who walked to get on base. Choe advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Zeremenko before coming on Gray’s hit.
• In the top of the sixth, the Panthers added their final run to make it 8-2 as Sevilla sent a long fly ball over the right centerfield wall.
