2016 NFCA Division I All-Region Teams
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Three members of the University of Pittsburgh softball team were named National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Mid-Atlantic All-Region selections, as announced by the NFCA Thursday afternoon. Senior Maggie Sevilla and sophomore Giorgiana Zeremenko were second-team honorees, while sophomore McKayla Taylor was a third-team selection.
In Sevilla's final season with the Panthers, the veteran had another outstanding year for Pitt. She led the team in runs scored (48), hits (60) and doubles (12) and ranked third on the team with a .351 batting average. Sevilla used her final season to make a mark in the record book, finishing in the top five of six career batting categories. The San Diego, Calif. native now ranks first all-time in career at-bats (675) and second in hits (212), runs (145), home runs (33), and RBIs (126). Sevilla also is tied for fifth with 34 career doubles.
Zeremenko also made her way into the record books in 2016, breaking the single season home run record with 17 long balls. In addition to home runs, she also led the Panthers with a .392 average, 52 RBIs, 11 total bases and an .888 slugging percentage. The power hitter, Zeremenko became one of the top offensive threats in the nation where at one point her 17 home runs led the ACC and sat her in the top-five in the nation. Her .931 slugging percentage hit the fourth-best mark in the country prior to the ACC championship game, while currently she ranks seventh with her final season mark of .888.
Taylor, who had another solid season for the Panthers, racked up a .331 average, while leading the team with 32 walks in 157 at-bats. Those 32 walks ranked her sixth overall in the ACC. Taylor contributed 52 hits this season including 10 home runs and 36 RBI, while she crossed the plate 36 times this season. On the field, the Cypress, Calif., native posted 63 putouts and a team-leading and ACC chart-topping 143 assists.
Per the NFCA, the awards honor softball student-athletes from the Association's 10 regions with first, second and third team selections. NFCA member coaches from each respective region voted on the teams, and all the honorees now become eligible for selection to the 2016 NFCA Division I All-American squads.
The 2016 NFCA Division I All-America teams will be announced at approximately 5 p.m. EST on Wednesday, June 1, via NFCA.org.
