TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - At the conclusion of the opening day of the 2016 ACC Outdoor Track and Field Championships, four Panthers punched tickets to the finals in their respective events.
"Overall I think it was a solid day," head coach Alonzo Webb said. "In a championship meet, you always have your ups and downs. I always tell the team that they need to do what they did to get themselves here and they will be fine."
In the women's 400 meter hurdles, sophomore Morgan Harvey ran a personal-best 1:00.51 for a third place finish in the first heat. Junior Laila Ismail turned in a second place finish in heat four after posting a 1:00.53. Harvey and Ismail recorded the seventh and eighth best times out of their event, qualifying them for the finals which will take place on Sunday at 7 p.m.
On the men's side, defending ACC Champion Desmond Palmer took first in the 400 meter hurdles after running a 50.64. The juniors' time automatically qualifies him for the finals, set to begin Sunday at 7:10 p.m. where he will be seeded first in the event.
Senior Chris Tate ran a career-best 21.12 in the preliminary 200 meter dash. Tate took third in heat three, while his time was fifth best in the event qualifying him for Sunday's final at 7:30 p.m.
"We're looking forward to the rest of the weekend. We had some good performances today and have some people going to the finals that we wanted to get in there," Webb said.
Action resumes tomorrow at 11:15 a.m. starting with the women's javelin. For the complete detailed schedule, click here.
