PITTSBURGH – The University of Pittsburgh softball team defeated North Carolina 11-3 in the Panthers third game of the weekend on Sunday at Vartabedian Field to take the series 2-1.
An eight-run inning in the second gave Pitt [18-9, 2-4 ACC] a cushion against the Tar Heels [14-14, 3-3 ACC], who were only able to score early in the game.
Senior Jenna Modic, sophomore Giorgiana Zeremenko and freshman Alexis Solak all went yard in the second inning, with Modic and Zeremenko going back-to-back. Zeremenko finished the weekend with three home runs.
Seven Panthers posted hits in the win, with redshirt senior Maggie Sevilla, Modic, Zeremenko, sophomore Erin Hershman and Solak, all recording two apiece.
On the mound, Pitt sophomore Kayla Harris picked up her eighth win of the season as she threw four strikeouts in the victory.
Pitt 11, North Carolina 3 (Five Innings)
• Pitt took the series from North Carolina after defeating the Tar Heels 11-3 in the third game of the series on Sunday.
• The Tar Heels got on the board early in the first. After Destiny DeBerry worked a walk to get on base and Taylor Wike moved her to second with a sacrifice bunt, Kristen Brown brought her to the plate with an RBI single to left field.
• The Panthers struck back in the second inning, posting eight runs. With the bases loaded and no outs, junior Kaitlin Manuel hit a grounder through the right side to bring home Pitt’s first two runs of the day. A few pitches later, Solak went opposite field and lined a pitch over the right field wall for a three-run homer. Modic then hit a high fly ball over the wall in left-center with a runner on to add two more. Zeremenko demolished a ball down the left field line which traveled over the wall as the Panthers hit back-to-back shots. The Panthers led 8-1 after two innings of play.
• North Carolina added two runs in the top of the third when Kendra Lynch grounded a single up the middle. Those would be the final runs of the game for UNC as Pitt continued to lead 8-3.
• Pitt would add a single run in the fourth as Hershman lined a double over DeBerry’s head in left field to score freshman Taylor Myers, who was running in Modic’s spot.
• The Panthers were able to shorten the game and win in five innings after sophomore McKayla Taylor hit a bases-clearing double to score redshirt senior Shelby Pickett and Sevilla in the bottom half.
