JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of Pittsburgh softball team lost a thriller to Radford, 4-3, in its final game of the Dolphin Invitational in Jacksonville, Fla.
After falling behind 3-1 in the sixth, the Panthers (6-4) fought back to knot the game at 3-3 following back-to-back home runs by senior Jenna Modic and junior Kaitlin Manuel in the top of the seventh. However, Pitt was unable to hold off the Highlanders (3-1) who managed to walk off on a single to left field.
“We had a great comeback today with the back-to-back home runs from Jenna [Modic] and Kait [Kaitlin Manuel],” head coach Holly Aprile said. “Kayla [Harris] did a good job in some tough spots on the mound.”
All three of the Panthers’ runs came from solo homers. In addition to Modic and Manuel’s late in the game, redshirt senior Maggie Sevilla sent one over the fence prior to in the top of the first inning.
“Although we didn’t end up with the result we wanted, I thought we got better as a team today,” Aprile said. “We had some inconsistent play in all aspects of the game this weekend, and it showed in our 2-3 record.”
Despite the 2-3 record, Pitt had seven players hit .300 or better and posted a team average of .300. The Panthers added eight home runs and outscored their opponents 40-21.
Sevilla and Modic each batted .429 (6-for-14) on the weekend and drove in a combined total of 12 runs. Sophomore Giorgiana Zeremenko blasted two home runs and led Pitt with eight RBIs at the Dolphin Invitational.
