No. 22 Pitt Heads to Edinboro Sunday

PITTSBURGH - The 22nd-ranked Pitt wrestling team (2-0) makes the trip to Edinboro, Pa., Sunday, Nov. 13, to take on the Fighting Scots (0-1) in McComb Fieldhouse at 1 p.m.

THE SERIES
- The Panthers meet the Fighting Scots for the 29th time in program history.
- Edinboro leads all meetings 16-12, with the last meeting coming a year ago in the Fitzgerald Field House that resulted in a 24-9 win for Pitt.
- Fourth year head coach Jason Peters is 3-1 all-time against the Fighting Scots.
LAST TIME OUT
- In the opening weekend of the 2016-17 season, the then-ranked 23rd Panthers collected two wins over Ohio and Campbell at the Mountaineer Duals in Morgantown, W.Va.
SCOUTING THE FIGHTING SCOTS
- Edinboro enters the weekend 0-1 after suffering a 24-13 loss to No. 6 Virginia Tech Saturday, Nov. 5.
- All four of Edinboro's returning NCAA qualifiers are among the top 20 in this week's InterMat rankings including No. 11 Austin Matthews (165/RS-Jr.), No. 12 Patricio Lugo (149/So.), No. 16 Billy Miller (285/RS-So.) and No. 18 Sean Russell (125/RS-So.).
- The Fighting Scots concluded the 2015-16 season 8-11 overall with a perfect 6-0 mark against conference opponents.
- Edinboro captured its fifth-straight PSAC Championship title in 2016, while finishing second at the EWL Championships.
PITT IN THE POLLS
- As a team, the Panthers rank No. 22 in the USA Today/NWCA Coaches Poll. Pitt entered the season at No. 23 and moved up a spot after a successful opening weekend.
- Last year, the Panthers were ranked for nine consecutive weeks (Dec. 15-Feb. 16) and jumped in after pulling an upset over then-ranked No. 15 Wisconsin early in the season. Pitt reached as high as No. 16 in the polls.
- Individually, three Panthers rank among the top 20 best wrestlers in the country according to InterMat this week. Leading the way is junior Dom Forys (133) at No. 8, redshirt junior Ryan Solomon (285) at No. 14 and sophomore TeShan Campbell (165) at No. 19.
FIERCE FORYS RETURNS
- Forys is back for his junior season with the bar raised higher than last year.
- The two-time NCAA qualifier fell short at in the 2016 ACC Championship finals at 133 pounds, falling to Virginia's George DiCamillo in an 8-4 decision.
- At the NCAA Championships Forys was one win short of earning All-America status after a trip that was highlighted by pinning NC State's Jamal Morris in 5:38.
- An All-ACC selection, Forys finished his sophomore campaign 28-5 overall, 15-2 in duals, 5-0 against ACC opponents and mixed in a few upsets, going 5-3 against ranked wrestlers.
- In duals at 133, Forys contributed 68 points to the Panthers, the most of any weight class.
NEW TO THE LINEUP
- Two true freshmen made their debut in a Pitt singlet last weekend in Jake Wentzel and Christian Dietrich.
- Wentzel, a local product out of South Park High School and two-time state champion, will fill the open gap at 157 pounds after losing Garbinsky to graduation.
- Dietrich also comes to Pitt with an accomplished high school career under his belt. The Greene, N.Y., native first wrestled at Greene High School where he was a state champion at 182 pounds before making the move to Wyoming Seminary where he helped his team to the 2016 National Prep School Wrestling Championship title.
LOOKING AHEAD
- The Panthers return to Pittsburgh Friday, Nov. 18, for the home opener against cross-state foe No. 12 Lehigh. The dual is set to begin at 7 p.m. in the Fitzgerald Field House.
