Pitt Sweeps Wake Forest; Earns 20th Win of Season

PITTSBURGH – The University of Pittsburgh volleyball team swept Wake Forest Friday night at the Fitzgerald Field House to mark its 20th win of the season.
The Panthers [20-7, 11-4 ACC], who sought revenge of the Demon Deacons [9-17, 5-10 ACC] after losing in Winston-Salem earlier this season, did just that as they defeated Wake Forest 25-21, 25-20, 27-25. The win gives Pitt its 20th this season and marks the third straight year the Panthers have collected at least 20 victories.
Pitt outplayed the Demon Deacons, recording more kills (49/39), assists (44/38), aces (7/4) and digs (41/37). The Panthers also recorded a higher hitting percentage (.291/.260).
Offensively, Pitt was led by redshirt freshman Stephanie Williams, who recorded 16 kills in 23 attempts and didn't record a single error. The Eastlake, Ohio, native hit .696 and posted eight digs.
Junior Mariah Bell also hit in double-digits, tallying 12 kills. Bell also had two blocks and eight digs.
Aiding the hitters was sophomore setter Kamalani Akeo who recorded 35 assists, while redshirt sophomore Angela Seman led the team on defense with 13 digs. Redshirt senior Jenna Potts was Pitt's leader in blocks with three.
Set One: Pitt 25, Wake Forest 21
Pitt got off to a slow start in the match, falling behind Wake Forest 4-0 at the start of the first set. However, the Panthers quickly powered back with four points of their own to tie the score.
After a short back and forth battle, the score was knotted 8-8, but Pitt fought to secure a 16-10 lead. The Panthers outscored the Demon Deacons 8-2, forcing them to call a timeout.
Pitt held its own for the remainder of the set, even though Wake Forest fought to come back within three. The Demon Deacons fought off two set points to trail 24-21, but a final kill from Williams sealed the 25-21 victory for the Panthers.
Set Two: Pitt 25, Wake Forest 20
Opposite of the first set, Pitt fired off the first four points, but Wake Forest matched that and tied the set once more. The Panthers were able to separate themselves by three points, 9-6, but the Demon Deacons answered and knotted the score again.
The two teams remained neck and neck throughout the midway point of the set, exchanging back and forth points to become tied 16-16.
Pitt came out on top, outscoring Wake Forest 9-6 in the final points of the set to defeat the Demon Deacons 25-20.
Set Three: Pitt 27, Wake Forest 25
After falling behind 6-3, Pitt caught up to Wake Forest and knotted the score 8-8. The Panthers found a groove and pushed ahead 13-9, forcing the Demon Deacons to call a timeout.
Pitt maintained a two-point lead through the middle of the set but Wake Forest pulled within one just points later, 18-17. The Demon Deacons made a comeback after the Panthers earned, match point 24-21, scoring three straight to tie it 24-24.
Pitt had another chance to win as a kill by freshman Layne Van Buskirk put the Panthers up 25-24, but a Wake Forest block on the next play knotted the score at 25. Pitt ended the match with back-to-back points, both kills by Bell.
