PITTSBURGH – University of Pittsburgh student-athletes Kamalani Akeo and Mikal Outcalt were named First National Bank Athletes of the Week, announced Tuesday.
Akeo, a sophomore setter on the Pitt volleyball team (15-7, 6-4 ACC), was a major key during the Panthers’ 3-0 sweep of Louisville Sunday afternoon. The Kapolei, Hawaii, native tallied 31 assists, helping junior Mariah Bell to nine kills and freshman Layne Van Buskirk and redshirt senior Jenna Potts to seven kills each. As a team, Pitt posted more kills (41/29), assists (35/23), aces (4/3), digs (42/37) and total team blocks (10.5/9.5) than Louisville and finished the match with a higher hitting percentage. The Panthers hit .270 and held the Cardinals to a .093 mark.
With help from a strong back line, Outcalt and the Pitt men’s soccer team (2-11-3, 0-5-2) held No. 16 Virginia to a scoreless draw in double overtime Friday evening at Ambrose Urbanic Field. The redshirt freshman made four saves on the night, with three coming in the second half and one in the second overtime period.
Up next, Pitt volleyball will stay at home for weekend matches against NC State and No. 8 North Carolina. The Panthers will face the Wolfpack at 7 p.m. ET Friday before hosting the Tar Heels at 1 p.m. ET Sunday in the Fitzgerald Field House. Both matches will be broadcast by ACC Network Extra.
The Pitt men’s soccer team will close regular-season play by visiting Virginia Tech Friday at 6 p.m. ET in Blacksburg, Va.
