PITTSBURGH - The University of Pittsburgh softball team split its fall exhibition doubleheader with West Virginia Wesleyan Sunday afternoon at Vartabedian Field in the Petersen Sports Complex. The Panthers dominated game one, earning an 8-1 victory, but fell in game two, 4-3.
Pitt plated 11 total runs on the day, including 17 hits. The Panthers recorded five homers coming from three different players. Senior Kaitlin Manuel and junior Erin Hershman both contributed two apiece.
In game one, Pitt dominated from start to finish, putting up eight runs on 11 hits while only surrendering one run, which came by way of a solo homer in the seventh inning.
Manuel led the way going 2-for-3 with two RBIs. She also blasted two of the Panthers' four homeruns in the game.
Hershman and freshman Connor McGaffic also provided some power at the plate, sending back-to-back blasts over the wall in the third inning. The shots broke the game wide open as the Panthers took a 6-0 lead.
Freshman Alexee Haynes and sophomore Marissa DeMatteo each had two hits as well.
Junior pitcher Kayla Harris tossed a complete game for Pitt in game one and didn't allow a single run until the seventh inning when West Virginia Wesleyan's Brittani Bible hit a solo homer to center field. Harris also had three strikeouts on the day.
Game two opened with a Bobcat single followed by a homer, giving the visiting team an early 2-0 lead.
Pitt put up three runs between the fourth and fifth innings, thanks to a Hershman two-run homer and an additional run by DeMatteo.
The Bobcats tacked on two runs in the top of the sixth, securing the 4-3 win.
In the circle, sophomore Sarah Dawson saw four innings of action, while freshman Brittany Knight finished the remaining three.
Pitt concludes the fall exhibition season 5-1 and will return to the field in the spring for the official 2016 campaign.
