PITTSBURGH – The University of Pittsburgh softball team continued its fall exhibition schedule at Vartabedian Field this past Saturday with a doubleheader sweep over West Virginia Wesleyan. Pitt took down the Lady Bobcats by scores of 3-1 and 4-2, respectively.
In game one, the Panthers got a quality start out of Jenna Modic, who pitched five innings and allowed just one run on three hits. Pitt got the offense going in the fourth inning when McKayla Taylor led off with a double and was brought home on a single by Modic. Pitt would quickly take a 2-0 lead in the fourth after Alexis Solak followed up with a suicide squeeze that scored Modic from third base.
In the fifth, freshman Taylor Myers scored an insurance run after Wesleyan mishandled a relay throw coming in from left field. In relief of Modic, sophomore Kayla Harris pitched two scoreless innings to close out a Panther win.
In game two, Pitt got the offense started in the second with an RBI single from sophomore Erin Hershman that scored redshirt senior Maggie Sevilla. Two innings later, Hershman smacked a solo homer to continue her productive outing. She finished with two runs batted in.
In the fifth inning, Modic hit a solo homerun of her own. Just before Modic’s homer, redshirt senior Shelby Pickett scored on a sac fly to right field off the bat of McKayla Taylor.
Defensively, Pitt had a good outing from freshman pitcher Sarah Dawson, who allowed two earned runs on eight hits over six innings. Sophomore Kayla Harris pitched one inning in relief and didn’t allow a run. The Panthers recorded four strikeouts and walked only one Lady Bobcat in the doubleheader.
Pitt will continue its fall schedule with another doubleheader this Saturday, September 26, against Saint Francis (PA) beginning at 1:00 p.m. at Vartabedian Field at the Petersen Sports Complex.
