Pitt Softball Defeats Slippery Rock in Fall Exhibition

PITTSBURGH – In its first time back on the field since the NCAA Regional Final, the University of Pittsburgh softball team defeated Slippery Rock University on Sunday afternoon at Vartabedian Field in its first exhibition game of the fall. The Panthers shut out SRU 9-0 and 14-0 in the doubleheader.
At the plate, Pitt knocked it out of the park, scoring a combined 23 runs on 24 hits on the day. Redshirt senior Shelby Pickett led the Panthers, recording four hits and three runs. Defensively Kayla Harris threw a five inning shutout before being relieved by senior Jenna Modic, while freshman Sarah Dawson tallied her first innings as a Panther, throwing four complete.
Pitt got off to a hot start in the first game scoring five runs in the opening frame. Modic and freshman Alexis Solak recorded two RBIs apiece, while the Panthers finished with eight hits and drew nine walks. Pitt’s defense held The Rock scoreless through all six innings, as the game was cut short due to inclement weather.
The Panthers continued their offensive success in game two, scoring four runs in the first inning. Leading Pitt with three hits apiece were Pickett and junior Kaitlin Manuel. The Panthers tallied 14 hits and saw nine different players cross the plate.

Pitt will host West Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday, September 19 in a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Vartbedian Field in the Petersen Sports Complex.
