Pitt Notches Numerous PRs at Tennessee Relays on Friday

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Highlighted by numerous student-athletes recording personal records, the University of Pittsburgh men's and women's track and field teams concluded day two of competition at the Tennessee Relays in Knoxville.
With the bulk of the meet starting today, the Panthers had solid performances across the board, especially by the women sprinters and James Toth in the Discus for the men.
"Overall it was a very successful dayin the individual events," head coach Alonzo Webb said. "Many of our freshmen competed well and continue to get better each week. Several personal bests were achieved today. I'm looking forrward to Saturday when all of the relays are contested and seeing our field event athletes finish on a high note as well."  
The Pitt women sprinted off to early success, garnering multiple top-10 finishes. Freshman Laila Ismail led the charge by placing third in the 400 meter hurdles with a personal record of 1:01.00. Following closely behind was fellow freshman Morgan Harvey who took fifth place (1:02.36). Khadeja Kearney recorded a personal best of 1:03.72, which was good for 11th place.
Freshman Alyssa Wise ran the fastest 100 meter dash time of the season for Pitt, taking fifth place overall and setting a personal record of 11.74. Khyla Freeman also PRed in the 100 with a 12.12, good for 20th place overall.
In the 400 meter dash, Evann Thompson had an outstanding race which placed her third overall in a career-best time of 55.08. Dominique Watkins also ran a PR in the 400 with a 56.15 and took 11th overall.  
It was another solid showing for Pitt in the 100 meter hurdles, led by Kearney who recorded her second personal-best time of the day with a time of 13.84. Her time placed her fourth overall. Ismail crossed the line in 14.44, and Harvey notched a PR of 15.23 as the freshmen placed 13th and 27th, respectively.  
On the men's side, Desmond Palmer ran a career-best 14.21 in the 110 meter hurdles which placed him third overall, while Ashad Johnson-Conley also PRed with a 14.45 which was good for sixth overall.  
In the field, freshman James Toth threw for a massive PR in the Discus with a distance of 50.23m (164-9 feet). He placed second overall and was just about one meter shy of first place which was captured by Jason Walker of South East Missouri State (51.29m).  
The Panthers conclude action at the Tennessee Relays on Saturday, while Pitt's long distance squad opens competition at Bucknell Bison Outdoor Classic.
