PITTSBURGH – The Pitt women’s basketball team defeated American 76-58 Tuesday afternoon at the Petersen Events Center.
“It was a great win where we got contributions from everyone,” head coach Suzie McConnell-Serio said. “Everyone got quality minutes for us today all the way down the bench.”
Today’s win marked the Panthers sixth straight home win and improved their season record to 8-4, while American falls to 2-9.
Sophomore Stasha Carey led all-scorers with 13 points and finished with double-digits for the 20th time of her career. Freshman Brenna Wise (11 points) and sophomore Yacine Diop (10 points) also posted double-digits performances, while freshman Cassidy Walsh contributed a career-high nine points to the Pitt victory and also chipped in three assists.
“Our starting lineup got off to a great start,” McConnell-Serio said. “We were starting differently with our press and picking up defensively changing to our match-up defense. I thought our players responded and got off to a good start so I was pleased with that.”
The Panthers jumped to an early 10-0 lead, holding the Eagles scoreless for the opening four minutes of play. Pitt held American to eight points in the first quarter, marking the second time the Panthers have held an opponent to that number. Pitt secured a 17-8 lead at the conclusion of the first.
The Panthers continued their scoring success in the second quarter, going on a 15-4 run to extend their lead to 45-21 marking the Pitt’s largest lead of the game (26 points). Junior Fred Potvin, freshmen Tania Lamb and Walsh came off the bench to score 14 of Pitt’s 28 points in the second. Lamb would go on to record a career-high eight points.
Following the halftime break, American began to settle in scoring 13 points while holding Pitt to the same.
The Panthers recorded 18 points in the final quarter, and held off the Eagles to secure the victory.
Pitt returns to action Wednesday, Dec. 30 at the Petersen Events Center as the squad hosts city-foe Duquesne. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
