Softball Sweeps Penn State to Conclude Fall Season

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The University of Pittsburgh softball team defeated Penn State in its final exhibition doubleheader on Sun., Oct. 6 at Beard Field. The Panthers defeated the Nittany Lions by a score of 7-0 in game one and 4-3 in game two.
Pitt finishes its fall season with a perfect 8-0 record.
Offensively, Pitt combined for 14 hits and 11 runs. Defensively, the Panthers held Penn State scoreless in game one and allowed just three runs in game two. Redshirt senior Shelby Pickett recorded a homerun for Pitt in game two.
The Panthers started things off in the first inning of game one, putting up a single run on the board. After three scoreless innings, Pitt tacked on six more runs to hit the seven run mark. The Panthers posted nine hits, five walks and had two hit batters.
Defensively, freshman Sarah Dawson pitched a five inning shut-out before being relieved by sophomore Kayla Harris.
Pitt was tested in game two as Penn State scored two runs in the first inning. However, the Panthers battled back in the second inning, scoring two runs off of Pickett’s homer in the third inning. The Nittany Lions answered in the bottom of the inning adding additional run to take a 3-2 lead.
Pitt earned the win in the fifth when senior Jenna Modic pushed sophomore McKayla Taylor across the plate with a double to score the Panther’s first run of the inning. Modic advanced to third on a passed ball and advanced home after tagging up on sophomore Erin Hershman’s deep foul ball to left field.
