Pitt Volleyball Blanks Georgia Southern in Three Straight Sets

BOULDER, Colo. – The University of Pittsburgh volleyball team (4-0, 0-0 ACC) won its fourth straight 3-0 match of the season this evening, beating Georgia Southern (0-4, 0-0 Sun Belt) 25-20, 25-17 and 25-20 in their first match of the Omni Classic in Boulder, Colo.
Overall the Panthers recorded 52 kills on 83 attempts posting a .494 overall mark. The team finished with 46 assists and 31 digs. Individually, three Pitt players finished the game with double-digit kills including senior Jessica Wynn, junior Amanda Orchard and sophomore Maria Genitsaridi. Wynn and Orchard concluded the match with 11 while Genitsaridi added 10. Orchard notched the highest hitting percentage of the night with a .494 post.
Pitt began the evening with a first set win, beating Georgia Southern 25-20. The Panthers took their first lead of the set with a score of 3-2, only to never give up that lead from that point on. Five Panthers recorded a hitting percentage of .500 or better in the first set including two perfect percentages from Orchard who went four-for-four and Mechael Guess who went three-for-three along with Genitsaridi, Casey Durham and Jenna Potts. Genitsaridi led the Panthers with five kills while Lindsey Zitzke added 13 assists.
A 25-17 second set win gave the Panthers a 2-0 overall lead over the Eagles. After a close 7-6 start to the set with Pitt leading, the Panthers scored five straight points to take a 12-6 lead. Four of the five points were tallied off of Georgia Southern errors while Durham recorded a kill for the fifth. Wynn led the second set for Pitt with five kills.
The final set of the match brought Pitt its fourth 3-0 win of the season after the Panthers took down the Eagles one final time by score of 25-20. Pitt scored five straight points to take a 6-1 lead early in the game. Three attack errors by Georgia Southern in addition to two kills, one by Guess and the other by Orchard, combined for the five point lead. Overall the Panthers recorded 20 kills in the final set of the match, six of which came from Orchard.
Pitt returns to action tomorrow at noon EST when they take on Portland State and will conclude the Omni Classic against tournament host Colorado tomorrow evening at 9:30 p.m. EST.
