Pitt Softball Takes Doubleheader from Penn State

PITTSBURGH – The University of Pittsburgh softball team defeated Penn State in a exhibition doubleheader at the Petersen Sports Complex on Sunday, September 28. The Panthers took game one by a score of 11-3 and won game two 11-10.
At the plate, Pitt knocked it out of the park, scoring 22 runs on 22 hits. Redshirt juniors Maggie Sevilla and Shelby Pickett along with junior Jenna Modic each recorded a homerun for the Panthers. Defensively, Savannah King pitched a five inning shut-out in the first game before being relieved. Penn State added three runs when King was not in the circle.
Pitt got off to a running start in the first game with eight runs in the opening inning. Throughout the game, the Panthers combined for 10 hits, six walks and one hit-by-pitch to add three more runs to hit the 11 run mark. Defensively, King and the Pitt defense held the Nittany Lions to just three runs.
Pitt was tested in game two against Penn State when it was down 6-0 in the first inning. However, the Panthers battled back inning by inning. Pitt scored four runs in both the third and fourth innings and capped off the win by notching three more in the fifth. The Panthers had a strong batting performance yet again, tallying 11 runs on 12 hits and recording seven walks. Back-to-back homeruns by Sevilla and Modic gave Pitt the go-ahead runs to win the game.
The Panthers will complete their fall season on Sunday, October 5 when they take on Saint Francis (PA) in a 1 p.m. doubleheader at the Petersen Sports Complex.
