Pitt Volleyball Blanks Middle Tennessee State in Season Opener

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio- The University of Pittsburgh Volleyball team (1-0, 0-0 ACC) recorded its first win of the season against Middle Tennessee State (0-1, 0-0 USA) by a score of 3-0 at the Hampton Inn Invitational in Bowling Green, Ohio this afternoon.
The Panthers blanked the Blue Raiders 25-21, 25-19 and 25-21 in three close sets.
Offensively and defensively, Pitt was led by Jessica Wynn who recorded 11 kills and 11 digs. Mechael Guess added 10 kills for the Panthers while Maria Genitsaridi aided the defense with nine digs.
Pitt began the match with a bang, beating Middle Tennessee State its first set of the year, 25-21, in a close race. The two teams traded points back and forth most of the match up until the final points of the set. Guess recorded six of her 10 kills during the first set.
The second set resulted in another win for the Panthers, taking down the Blue Raiders by a score of 25-19. Pitt and Middle Tennessee State went neck and neck the entire set until Pitt began to pull away for the win.
Another nail-biter set occurred between the Panthers and Middle Tennessee State during the third set. The two teams were tied late in the match at 17 but Pitt was able to finish with the win and take match. Overall, the Panthers recorded 48 kills and 41 digs.
The Panthers return to action tomorrow morning at 10 a.m., taking on the Dayton Flyers. They will wrap up their weekend at the Hampton Inn Invitational Saturday evening when they take on tournament host Bowling Green at 7:30 p.m.
