PITTSBURGH – Looking to tie its longest winning streak in Petersen Events Center history, the University of Pittsburgh women’s basketball team hosts in-state foe Saint Francis on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m.
The Panthers have registered seven home victories in a row, which is one behind the 2008-09 team that reeled off eight consecutive wins. Pitt is 8-3 overall and has won three straight, while Saint Francis is 1-8 and is coming off its first win of the season at Coastal Carolina.
KIESEL AMONG THE BEST IN THE ACC:
Brianna Kiesel has established herself as one of the top guards in the ACC. Coming off a career-high 10 assist performance against Youngstown State in which she did not turn the ball over, Kiesel leads the conference in assist/turnover ratio (3.3), while also ranking 2nd in assists (4.5), 2nd in 3-point field goal percentage (47.8), 4th in free throw percentage (88.9), 6th in steals (2.1) and 8th in scoring (16.5). She only trails teammate Stasha Carey in 3-point field goal percentage as Carey tops the league at 50 percent (13-of-26).
LAST TIME OUT:
Last time the Panthers were on the court they breezed past previously unbeaten Youngstown State 78-52 to hand the Penguins their first loss of the season. Pitt had five players score in double figures for the first time since Dec. 29, 2012, and held YSU to just 25.8 percent shooting (17-66), which is the lowest shooting percentage the Pitt defense has tallied this season.
Yacine Diop, Cora McManus (season-high) and Chelsea Welch (season-high) all had 12 points vs. YSU, while Brianna Kiesel had 11 and Monica Wignot had all 10 of her points in the first half. With her 10 assists, Kiesel moved into 10th place on Pitt’s career assists list, passing WNBA All-Star Shavonte Zellous. Kiesel now has 339 career assists.
SCOUTING SAINT FRANCIS:
Led by Alexa Hayward’s 37-point eruption, the Red Flash tallied their first win of the season last week at Coastal Carolina. Hayward is by far the Saint Francis’ leading scorer at 26.0 points per game, while also averaging 4.1 rebounds and 5.4 assists per game. Aisha Brock is the team’s second leading scorer at 10.6 ppg. The Red Flash is allowing 89.3 points per game and is being out-rebounded by a margin of 14.7.
