PITTSBURGH - A 29-4 run which spanned two halves led the University of Pittsburgh women's basketball team (3-2) to a 72-47 victory over Radford University (1-3) on Wednesday afternoon at the Petersen Events Center.
Senior Monica Wignot paced four players in double figures with a career-high 20 points on 9-of-12 shooting. She also contributed three rebounds, four assists and four blocks. Wignot, who entered today's game ranked third in the ACC in blocks per game, has now had at least three rejections in four of Pitt's five games this season.
"I thought we did a good job of communicating, defending and challenging today, and that was the focus coming in," head coach Suzie McConnell-Serio said. "I thought Monica Wignot was impressive today. She was aggressive on the block and was able to step out and hit the three. It was a well-balanced game for her."
Fred Potvin finished the contest with 15 points on 5-of-10 shooting from long range. She is now 11-of-22 from 3-point range over her last three contests.
Cora McManus reached double-digits for the second consecutive game with 11 points, while Aysia Bugg also tallied 11 and chipped in with four rebounds and three assists. Brianna Kiesel had five points, seven rebounds and seven assists.
Trailing 15-12 midway through the opening half, the Panthers used an 11-2 run to gain a 23-17 lead, capped off by Wignot's first career 3-pointer which forced a Radford timeout with 3:51 remaining.
The Panthers ultimately ended the half on an 18-2 run with two more baskets from Wignot and a triple from Bugg, as Pitt took a 30-17 lead into the locker room. The Panthers held the Highlanders to just 7-of-30 shooting in the half (23.3 percent).
Radford missed seven of its first eight shots to start the second half, and Potvin's third 3-pointer of the game stretched Pitt's lead to 37-19 with 15:54 remaining.
Pitt continued to pull away and would play with a lead of 20 or more for the remainder of the game. Its largest lead of 31 came with 4:29 remaining on a jumper in the lane from McManus (64-33).
The Panthers assisted on 24 of their 28 made field goals and shot 43 percent overall for the game (28-of-65). Pitt held a 36-22 advantage in the paint and turned 22 Radford turnovers into 26 points.
Pitt returns to action this Sunday against Loyola (Md.) at the Petersen Events Center. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
