
Pitt Basketball Visits #23 James Madison on Sunday

HARRISONBURG, Va. - Making its first road trip of the season, the University of Pittsburgh women's basketball team (2-1) will take on #23 James Madison University (3-0) Sunday afternoon with tip at the JMU Convocation Center set for 2 p.m.
PITT LOOKS TO STAY HOT:
The Panthers are coming off a record-setting performance against Michigan as Pitt established a new program mark with 13 made 3-pointers during an 85-64 blowout of the Wolverines. Pitt was 13-of-26 from long range which broke the previous record of 12 triples against Central Michigan on December 31, 2010.
Senior Brianna Kiesel and sophomore Fred Potvin combined to make 11 of the 13 3-pointers. Kiesel was a career-best 6-of-9 from long range, while Potvin was 5-of-7, tying her career best. Kiesel had a game-high 27 points and in the process moved in to ninth place on Pitt's career scoring list, passing Taneisha Harrison. Kiesel now has 1,394 points. Her 27 point outing was the third most points scored in the ACC this season.
CAREY OWING THE GLASS:
Freshman Stasha Carey's career is off to a fantastic start. The 6-foot-2 forward is averaging 13.3 points and 12.0 rebounds in her first three games. Her 12 boards a game ranks fourth in the ACC.
Carey has one double-double this season (17 points and 16 rebounds vs. Niagara), and was very close to a double-double in each of here other two games (Nine points, 11 rebounds vs. Princeton; 14 points, nine rebounds vs. Michigan).
FRESHMEN IMPACT:
Head coach Suzie McConnell-Serio inserted all three freshmen into the starting lineup vs. Michigan and it paid off. Along with Carey, Aysia Bugg scored in double-figures for the second straight game, while Yacine Diop had four points, two rebounds, an assist, a block and two steals.
Pitt's starting lineup, in fact, features four new starters. Brianna Kiesel is the only returner and has started all 93 games of her career. Along with the three freshmen, senior Monica Wignot is also starting in her first and only year on the court.
WHERE THEY RANK:
Early into the season, the Panthers find themselves in the individual ACC statistical rankings. Of note, Stasha Carey is fourth in rebounding (12.0), second in 3-point field goal percentage (.667, 6-of-9) and sixth in blocks per game (2.0).
Monica Wignot leads the ACC in minutes per game (34.3), is third in blocks per game (2.7) and 12th in assist/turnover ratio (2.3). Brianna Kiesel ranks 15th in scoring (15.3), and Aysia Bugg is tied for first in free throw percentage (1.000, 9-for-9).
SCOUTING JAMES MADISON:
Coming off an NCAA Tournament victory a season ago, the Dukes have four players who average double-figure scoring, led by Precious Hall at 20.0 per game. Lauren Okafor has been a monster on the boards, grabbing 15.3 per game to go along with her 11.0 points per game. Pitt will look to avenge a 71-61 loss to the Dukes from last season at the Petersen Events Center.
