Samford at Pitt • Petersen Events Center • November 16, 2014
Pitt 63, Samford 56 • EA Sports Maui Invitational Game One
•Pitt played its first of four EA Sports Maui Invitational games and registered a 63-56 win over Samford at the Petersen Events Center.
•Next week, Pitt will travel to Maui, Hawaii to play four games, including three as part of the EA Sports Maui Invitational. Pitt opens its Hawaii trip with a game against the University of Hawaii on Maui on Friday, Nov. 21 at 7 p.m. HT/Midnight ET.
•Pitt won its 25th consecutive game against a non-conference opponent at home. Pitt improves to 112-3 all-time vs. non-conference opponents in the Petersen Events Center. Pitt has also won 133 of their last 137 home games against regular season non-conference opponents at home.
•With the win, Pitt improves to 195-27 all-time in the Petersen Events Center. Pitt now needs just five more victories to reach 200-win mark at the Petersen Events Center. It improves to 54-1 all-time in November games in the Petersen Events Center.
•Jamie Dixon improved to 290-96 all-time as a head coach in his 12th year at Pitt. He needs just 10 more wins to reach the 300-win plateau.
•Pitt shot 51.1 percent (24-47) from the floor and totaled 20 assists on 24 field goals for a 83 percent assist:turnover ratio. The Panthers outscored the Bulldogs 36-14 in the paint and 24-0 in fast break points.
•Sophomore Michael Young registered career-highs for points (20), field goals made (10), field goal attempts (13) and minutes played (34) in leading Pitt today. Young has now reached double digit scoring in six career games. He has started 38 consecutive games to start off his career. Young scored 14 of his 20 points in the second half alone.
•For the second consecutive game, sophomore Jamel Artis notched double figure scoring. He scored a career-high 14 points vs. Niagara on Friday night and backed that up with a 12-point (4-8 FG) outing today. He also hit a career-high tying two 3-pointers today and played a career-high 32 minutes. He has now reached double figure scoring four times in his career. It was his second career start. Artis scored 10 of his 12 points in the first half.
•Sophomore Josh Newkirk tied a career-high with seven assists this afternoon.
•Junior James Robinson finished with eight points, eight assists and six rebounds in 35 minutes of action.
•Sophomore Sheldon Jeter finished with a Pitt-high eight points off the bench.
•Pitt played Samford for the first time in men's basketball.
