Softball Hosts UConn at Vartabedian Field This Weekend

PITTSBURGH—The University of Pittsburgh softball team continues Big East action this weekend, hosting Connecticut in a three-game set at Vartabedian Field at the Petersen Sports Complex. Play opens with a noon doubleheader on Saturday, April 21, while game three will be at noon on Sunday, April 22.
Freshman Savannah King (16-14) improved to second overall in single-season strikeouts on Wednesday. She collected 11 strikeouts on the day against Syracuse and boasts 157 in her rookie season. She now trails Nikki Gasti, who holds the school record at 213.
The Panthers (23-21, 6-10 Big East) turned their eighth double play of the season in the first inning of game one against the Orange when senior Niki Cognigni scooped up a ground ball and tapped second before throwing the ball to senior Ciera Damon at first. King struck out the next batter to end the frame.
UConn (20-18, 8-6 Big East) is coming off a split in its doubleheader against DePaul. The Huskies dropped the first game 4-0, but recovered with a 5-3 victory in game two. Pitcher Lauren Duggan gave up three hits in four innings and improved to 5-5 on the year with the win. At the plate, Amy Vaughan leads the team with a .339 batting average and .722 slugging percentage this season.
UConn leads the all-time series 9-7. However, the Panthers won two-of-three last year.
