Throckmorton Homers in Game Two Against Kent State

PITTSBURGH—Freshman Carissa Throckmorton hit her third home run of the season, however the University of Pittsburgh couldn’t overcome an early deficit in an 8-5 loss to Kent State in the second game of a doubleheader at Vartabedian Field at the Petersen Sports Complex on Wednesday.
With no outs on the board in the seventh inning, Throckmorton blasted a two-RBI homer through center field to pull the Panthers within three, 8-5. Pitt would place another runner on base, but would strand her in the eventual loss. Nine Panthers were left on base in the contest.
Throckmorton became the fourth member of the squad to smack a home run against the Golden Flashes in two games on Wednesday. In Pitt’s 6-0 win in the first of the two games, three others recorded a home run – senior Yvette Bravo, junior Holly Stevens and freshman Savannah King. The Panthers have blasted 23 homers on the season.
Pitt (16-13) scored a pair of runs in the first two innings. It began with a RBI single to center field from Throckmorton that allowed classmate Maggie Sevilla to score one of her team-leading 20 runs on the season.
In the second frame, Sevilla recorded a RBI when senior Niki Cognigni went home on an infield error by Kent State.
Throckmorton recorded another RBI in the fifth when she was walked with bases loaded. Sevilla scored after reaching on an infield Kent State (13-15) error.
Throckmorton finished the game 2-for-2 with one run and four RBI.
Freshman Alexa Larkin suffered the loss (4-6), allowing five earned runs on 12 hits. She struck out six batters, but walked none in the contest.
The Golden Flashes took a 3-0 advantage in the top of the third with three hits and a Pitt error. They added three more runs in the fifth off four hits and another Panther error - all after two batters were retired. Kent State rounded out its scoring in the top of the seventh.
The Panthers return to action this weekend, hosting USF in a three-game series at Vartabedian Field at the Petersen Sports Complex. The set begins with a doubleheader on Saturday, March 31 at noon and concludes on Sunday, April 1 at noon.
